Description and history
The branch offers the Multnomah County Library catalog of two million books, periodicals and other materials. Opening on May 19, 1971, it replaced the Arleta and Lents branch libraries, though the area had been served as early as 1904 with a deposit station in a drug store in Lents.{{cite news|author=Staff|title=Multnomah County Library's Holgate Branch to reopen|url=http://djcoregon.com/news/2000/10/04/multnomah-county-library8217s-holgate-branch-to-reopen/|accessdate=7 November 2012|newspaper=Daily Journal of Commerce|date=October 4, 2000|archive-date=2 January 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140102200836/http://djcoregon.com/news/2000/10/04/multnomah-county-library8217s-holgate-branch-to-reopen/|url-status=live}} Renovated in 2000, it has {{convert|6060|ft2|m2}} of floor space and can hold up to 30,000 volumes.{{cite web|title=Holgate Library History|url=http://multcolib.org/agcy/hgt-history.html|publisher=Multnomah County Library|date=November 18, 2011|accessdate=November 3, 2012|archive-date=July 12, 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120712194914/http://multcolib.org/agcy/hgt-history.html|url-status=live}} The renovations included seismic upgrades, a new roof, new windows, and a solar-powered electricity back-up system, among other items.{{cite news|author=Staff|title=Solar power lights library in emergency|url=http://djcoregon.com/news/2000/11/13/solar-power-lights-library-in-emergency/|accessdate=7 November 2012|newspaper=The Daily Journal of Commerce|date=November 13, 2000|archive-date=2 January 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140102200834/http://djcoregon.com/news/2000/11/13/solar-power-lights-library-in-emergency/|url-status=live}} In February 2008, the branch added the county's only teen and children's librarians.{{cite news|last=Koffman|first=Rebecca|title=Neighborhood News Updates|newspaper=The Oregonian|date=April 3, 2008|page=Metro Portland Neighbors, 8}}
