The two facilities merged as the Eastern Fever Hospital in 1884 and a new isolation block was built in 1935. The hospital joined the National Health Service in 1948 as the Eastern Hospital and became increasingly focused on neurological patients before closing down in 1982.
Construction of the new Homerton Hospital began in 1982 and was completed in July 1986. The hospital was built at a cost of £20 million and was opened by the Princess Royal in March 1987.{{cite web|url=http://www.homerton.nhs.uk/about-the-trust/our-history/homerton-hospital-1986-present/|title=Homerton Hospital (1986 - present)|publisher=Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090501154539/http://www.homerton.nhs.uk/about-the-trust/our-history/homerton-hospital-1986-present/|access-date=28 May 2018|archive-date=1 May 2009}}{{cite news|title=Princess Anne opens Homerton Hospital|date= 10 March 1987|publisher=Thames News}} As well as replacing the Eastern Hospital, the new hospital replaced the Mothers' Hospital Lower Clapton Road in Hackney, which closed in 1986, and the German Hospital on Ritson Road, which closed in 1987.{{cite web|url=http://www.homerton.nhs.uk/about-the-trust/our-history/|title=Our History|publisher=Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090501130754/http://www.homerton.nhs.uk/about-the-trust/our-history/|access-date=28 May 2018|archive-date=1 May 2009}}
