Hongik University ({{korean|hangul=홍익대학교|rr=Hongik Daehakgyo}}; colloquially as Hongdae) is a private university in Mapo, Seoul, South Korea. It was founded in 1946. History

The university was established shortly after Korean independence. The Daejongkyo founders, upon returning to Korea following Japanese surrender after years of exile in China, prioritized the establishment of an educational institution.{{cite web|url=https://www.yna.co.kr/view/AKR20160203137700004?input=1179m |script-title=ko:홍익대 초대이사장 유족, 교육부에 임원진 승인 취소 요청|language=ko |publisher=Yonhapnews |author=Lim Gi-chang |date=2016-02-03|access-date=2020-10-25}} As a result, in 1946, they founded the school, then named Hongmoon-daehakgwan ({{Korean|hangul=홍문대학관|labels=no}}). Lee Hung Soo, a wealthy Korean independent activist, donated the initial funds from which the university found its beginnings.
