Hot lap
Hot lap is a term that is associated with some sports.
In motor racing
A 'hot lap', also called a 'flying lap' or a 'timed lap', is a complete lap around a racetrack that takes place in free practice or qualification, the time of which is recorded. In general, when hot lapping, the goal is to achieve the fastest possible time around the circuit.{{cite web | url=https://www.mclaren.com/racing/f1-playbook/flying-lap/ | title=McLaren F1 Playbook - Flying Lap }} During practice, this may just be to achieve a personal record, or a track record. In qualification, it is typically used to get the best possible starting grid position.{{cite web | url=https://flowracers.com/blog/in-out-hot-lap/ | title=In Lap, Out Lap & Hot Lap – What They Are (And Differences) – FLOW RACERS | date=28 June 2022 }}

In ice hockey
Hot-lapping may also refer to a superstitious routine that ice hockey players, and sometimes other team personnel, perform hours before a game for good luck, in which one skates around the perimeter of the rink alone. For example, the Washington Capitals have employed hot-lapping in preparation for games during their 2018 Stanley Cup championship run, as well as their Stanley Cup Finals opponent, the Vegas Golden Knights. {{cite web |last1=Hasoup |first1=Jimmy |title=Golden Knights troll Capitals with 'hot lap' prior to Stanley Cup Final game |url=https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/2018/06/02/stanley-cup-2018-golden-knights-capitals-hot-lap-jonathan-marchessault/666319002/ |website=USA TODAY |accessdate=11 June 2018 |date=2 June 2018}}{{cite news |last1=Khurshudyan |first1=Isabelle |title='It's a wake-up call for all of us': Ovechkin fumes as flailing Caps drop Game 4|url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/if-you-dont-want-to-play-dont-play-ovechkin-fumes-as-flailing-caps-drop-game-4/2019/04/18/3e680464-6212-11e9-bfad-36a7eb36cb60_story.html|newspaper=Washington Post |accessdate=22 November 2019 |date=18 April 2019}}
