The House of Lobanov-Rostovsky ({{langx|ru|Лобановы-Ростовские}}, literally "Lobanov-Rostovskys") is a Russian princely family that claims their descent from the House of Rurik{{Cite book |last=Lieven |first=Dominic |title=Russia's Rulers Under the Old Regime |date=1989 |publisher=Yale University Press |isbn=9780300049374 |location=New Haven |pages=1}} and whose male-line ancestors were the {{ill|Rostov princes|ru|Ростовские князья}}, who ruled the Principality of Rostov, the area now in the present-day Russia.{{cite Efron|Лобановы-Ростовские}}Владимир Вольвович Богуславский, Славянская энциклопедия: Киевская Русь-Московия (''Slavic Encyclopedia: Kievan Rus – Muscovy), "КнязьяЛобановы-Ростовские", [https://books.google.com/books?id=sBedA2OHAzYC&pg=PA671 pp.668-674]

History

It originated with Prince {{ill|Ivan Aleksandrovich Rostovsky|lt=Ivan Rostovsky|ru|Ростовский, Иван Александрович Лобан}}, nicknamed Loban ({{lang|ru|Лобан}}) for his wide forehead ({{lang|ru|"Лоб"}} means 'forehead' in Russian), who lived at the end of the 15th century and was a descendant of reigning princes of Rostov the Great.Gerhard Friedrich Müller, Известие о дворянах Российских, 1790, [https://books.google.com/books?id=QQH6AgAAQBAJ&pg=PA424 p.424]

Some notable members of the family are listed in the "Lobanov-Rostovsky" article.

Their coat of arms has a divided shield: the upper part of blue color shows Archangel Gabriel, silver with golden halo and sword. The lower part in red shows a standing, gold-armed silver stag with a golden collar. Around the coat of arms are the princely insignia. Among the (former) estate of the family is the Lobanov-Rostovsky Palace in downtown Saint Petersburg.{{Cite book |last=Hanukai |first=Maksim |title=Tragic Encounters: Pushkin and European Romanticism |date=2023 |publisher=University of Wisconsin Press |isbn=9780299341404 |pages=214}}
