"Hungry" is a 1966 hit single composed by the songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil,{{cite web |url=http://mann-weil.com/thehits.html |title=Official Mann & Weil Website |access-date=2009-02-23 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090205180650/http://mann-weil.com/thehits.html |archive-date=2009-02-05 |url-status=dead}} and performed by Paul Revere & the Raiders.
Recording
In contrast with the Raiders' previous top 10 hit, the guitar-driven "Kicks", the single "Hungry" has bassist Phil Volk playing the main riff.{{cite interview|last=Volk|first=Phil|interviewer=Stephen Wren and R. Gary Patterson|title=Pop Odyssey Radio Network|date=May 4, 2011|work=Pop Odyssey Radio }} The creation of the bass line in "Hungry" was complex. It required that the bass part be recorded 3 times, then overdubbed. The components had to be synchronized: first, a normal bass line. That was followed by a line that was an octave higher and the last track was recorded as a fuzz bass, which was created by turning up an amplifier full blast, as using bass pedals wasn't available in those years.{{cite interview |last=Volk |first=Phil |subject-link=Phil Volk |interviewer=Dave Kapulsky |title=Relics and Rarities |publisher=WIBG |location=Ocean City, New Jersey |date=June 19, 2011 }} The result was what author and Rolling Stone critic Dave Marsh calls, "...the center of the performance...a lethal bass line".{{cite book|title=The Heart of Rock & Soul : The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made|last=Marsh|first=Dave|authorlink=Dave Marsh|year=1989|publisher=New American Library|location=New York|isbn=0-452-26305-0|page=[https://archive.org/details/heartofrocksoul100mars/page/528 528]|url=https://archive.org/details/heartofrocksoul100mars/page/528}} Lead singer Mark Lindsay plays tambourine on the record.{{Cite web|date=2010-02-06|title="We were more the American Stones than the American Beatles...": An Interview With Paul Revere and the Raiders' Mark Lindsay|url=http://stereoembersmagazine.com/american-stones-american-beatles-interview-paul-revere-raiders-mark-lindsay/|access-date=2021-04-15|website=Stereo Embers Magazine|language=en-US}}
