The design replaced the Hunter 28 in the company line, which had been produced from 1989 to 1994.{{cite web|url = https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/hunter-28|title = Hunter 28 sailboat specifications and details|access-date = 8 November 2018|last = Browning|first = Randy|work = sailboatdata.com|year = 2018|archive-url = https://archive.today/20220405000753/https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/hunter-28|archive-date = 5 April 2022|url-status = live}}

Production

The design was built by Hunter Marine in the United States between 1995 and 1999, but it is now out of production.{{cite web|url = https://sailboatdata.com/builder/hunter-marine-usa|title = Hunter Marine|accessdate = 5 April 2022|last = McArthur|first = Bruce|work = sailboatdata.com|year = 2022|archive-url = https://archive.today/20200730183858/https://sailboatdata.com/builder/hunter-marine-usa|archive-date = 30 July 2020|url-status = live}}

Design

The Hunter 280 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass. It has a fractional sloop B&R rig with a full-batten mainsail and 110% genoa, a raked stem, a walk-through reverse transom with a swimming platform, an internally-mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a wheel or an optional tiller and a fixed fin keel or option shoal-draft wing keel. It displaces {{convert|6500|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} and carries {{convert|2100|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} of ballast.

The boat has a draft of {{convert|5.00|ft|m|abbr=on}} with the standard keel and {{convert|3.50|ft|m|abbr=on}} with the optional shoal draft wing keel.

The boat is fitted with a Japanese Yanmar diesel engine of {{convert|18|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}}, with a {{convert|9|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} optional. The fuel tank holds {{convert|20|u.s.gal}} and the fresh water tank has a capacity of {{convert|40|u.s.gal}}.

Standard factory equipment supplied included self-tailing winches, double lifelines, a teak and holly cabin sole, a dinette table that converts to a berth, four opening ports, an enclosed head with a {{convert|20|u.s.gal}} holding tank, shower, icebox, kitchen dishes, anchor, fog horn and life jackets. The boat has sleeping accommodation for six people. Optional equipment included a spinnaker and an LPG stove.

The design has a PHRF racing average handicap of 186 with a high of 192 and low of 180. It has a hull speed of {{convert|6.51|kn|km/h|2|abbr=on}}.{{cite web|url = http://www.sailingjoy.com/sailboat_specs/sailboat_specs/view/5713/hunter-280|title = Sailboat Specifications for Hunter 280 |access-date = 15 November 2018|work = Sailing Joy|author= InterVisionSoft LLC|year = 2018|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20181116000943/http://www.sailingjoy.com/sailboat_specs/sailboat_specs/view/5713/hunter-280|archive-date= 16 November 2018|url-status= dead}}
