Hurles in the late 1800s when he settled in the area and established a hotel.{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=VTREAQAAMAAJ|title=History of Butte County, California: With Biographical Sketches of the Leading Men and Women of the County who Have Been Identified with Its Growth and Development from the Early Days to the Present|last=Mansfield|first=George C.|date=1918-01-01|publisher=Historic record Company|language=en}} The region became known as the Boston Ranch because of Hurles' previous residence in Boston, Massachusetts. The first post office was established in 1880 and named Hurleton in honor of Hurles who was also its first postmaster.{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=9BYVAAAAYAAJ|title=History of Butte County, California|date=1882-01-01|publisher=H.L.
