History
File:Railway Station - Hurstville.jpg
Hurstville station opened on 15 October 1884 on the terminus of the Illawarra railway line from Redfern. On 26 December 1885, the line was extended to Sutherland.[http://www.nswrail.net/locations/show.php?name=NSW:Hurstville Hurstville Station] NSWrail.net The station initially had two side platforms and two through running lines. When the line was duplicated in 1925, the station was rebuilt with two island platforms, with the southern platform serving the Illawara main line and the northern platform serving the Illawara Local (IL) line.
The Illawara Local pair of tracks end at Hurstville, with the up track continuing a little further to the King Georges Rd underpass. Both tracks merge onto the Illawara mainline. There are also three sidings branching off the Up Illawara Local, which are now unused with some track lifted.{{Cite book|url=https://railsafe.org.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/39806/Illawarra-Suburban-Line-Central-to-Waterfall.PDF|title=Drivers Route Knowledge Diagrams – Illawara Suburban line (Central to Waterfall)|publisher=Sydney Trains|year=2019|pages=17–18}}{{Cite web|url=https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/SIXReports/pdf/mapReport4572698570121278380.pdf|title=NSW Six Maps|website=SIX Maps|access-date=20 December 2019|archive-date=20 December 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191220022650/https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/SIXReports/pdf/mapReport4572698570121278380.pdf|url-status=dead}}
In 1920, five people were killed when two trains collided while one was shunting at the station.[http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article15903931 Hurstville Train disaster] Sydney Morning Herald 26 August 1920 page 8
In 1965, the air rights above the platforms were covered by the Hurstville Super Centre shopping centre, one of the first suburban stations in Sydney to receive such treatment of its overhead airspace.
The original station buildings survived underneath until demolished during refurbishment in the early 1990s. Prior to September 1998, the station received an easy access upgrade which included lifts to each platform.
The centre was refurbished in 2008 and rebranded Hurstville Central.{{Cite news|url=http://www.theleader.com.au/story/4757736/hurstvilles-version-of-pie-in-the-sky/|title=Hurstville's version of pie in the sky|last=Trembath|first=Murray|date=2017-09-29|work=St George & Sutherland Shire Leader|access-date=2017-11-23|language=en}}
There have previously been plans to build several residential towers above the station[https://web.archive.org/web/20030921230451/http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/09/12/1063341769082.html?from=storyrhs On track – railway views drawing developers' gaze] Sydney Morning Herald 13 September 2003 but these plans have been shelved over concerns about the integrity of overhead supports in the event of a derailment.[https://web.archive.org/web/20041210205934/http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Safety-risk-stops-rail-apartments/2004/12/03/1101923341785.html Safety risk stops rail apartments] Sydney Morning Herald 4 December 2004
In late 2019, as part of the Transport for NSW's More Trains More Services program, a crossover was proposed to be built east of the station, to allow Hurstville to Bondi Junction all station services to swap operation from the Illawarra Local tracks to the Illawarra Main tracks and utilise platforms 3 & 4 instead of 1 & 2. The crossover would optimise the capacity of T4 and South Coast Line services along the Illawarra railway line corridor.{{cite web|url=https://yoursay.transport.nsw.gov.au/49249/documents/119202/download|title=More Trains, More Services – Hurstville Crossover Project Review of Environmental Factors|publisher=Transport for NSW|date=October 2019|access-date=1 November 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191031225644/https://yoursay.transport.nsw.gov.au/49249/documents/119202/download|archive-date=31 October 2019|url-status=live}} Construction began in 2020 and it was commissioned and brought into service in February 2024, with final works completed in June 2024.{{Cite web |last=Transport for NSW |first= |date=2024-06-13 |title=Hurstville Crossover Project |url=https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/projects/current-projects/hurstville-crossover-project |access-date=2024-08-30 |website=Transport for NSW |language=en-AU}}
