"IFHY" (an acronym for I Fucking Hate You) is a song by American rapper and producer Tyler, the Creator featuring Pharrell Williams from the former's third studio album, Wolf, released on April 2, 2013.{{cite web |last=Renshaw |first=David |title=Tyler, The Creator's 'Wolf' album tracklist confirmed |url=https://www.nme.com/news/music/tyler-the-creator-3-51-1258138 |website=NME.com |access-date=27 January 2024 |date=27 March 2013}} The song was written and produced by Tyler. The music video for "IFHY" was released on March 29, 2013.
Background
"IFHY" is the first collaboration between Tyler, the Creator and Pharrell Williams. Tyler has recounted many times about how Pharrell inspired him to take music more seriously; "I didn't have a father. I didn't have a big brother, I didn't have a cousin. So as a kid, since ten or eleven, Pharrell is who I looked at."{{cite web |last=Kyles |first=Yohance |date=8 February 2023 |title=Tyler, The Creator Recalls Pharrell Inspiring Him To Take Making Music More Seriously |url=https://allhiphop.com/news/tyler-the-creator-recalls-pharrell-inspiring-him-to-take-making-music-more-seriously/ |access-date=27 January 2024 |website=AllHipHop.com}} The two would later collaborate on the video for another Wolf song, "Answer",{{cite web |last=Moskovitch |first=Greg |title=Tyler, The Creator Unveils 'Tamale' Music Video |url=https://musicfeeds.com.au/news/tyler-the-creator-unveils-tamale-music-video/ |website=MusicFeeds.com |access-date=27 January 2024 |date=8 October 2013}} and many other times throughout the decade, most recently on Pharrell's song "Cash In Cash Out".
In March 2013, Tyler stated that Kanye West wanted to be on "IFHY" as well as another Wolf cut, "48", but was turned down.{{cite web |last=Brooks |first=Richard |title=Tyler, the Creator Turned Down Kanye West Feature on "IFHY" |url=https://hypebeast.com/2013/5/tyler-the-creator-turned-down-kanye-west-feature-on-ifhy |website=HypeBeast.com |access-date=27 January 2024 |date=28 May 2013}} When asked why he refused, Tyler stated, "cause it was mine. he wanted to be on IFHY too! but i was like, nah hahaha. ye is soo awesome, i talk to him almost everyday it seems like. its cool to have someone you can level with about art and everything else" [sic].{{cite web |last=Tardio |first=Andres |title=KANYE WEST WANTED TO BE ON TYLER, THE CREATOR'S "IFHY" |url=https://hiphopdx.com/news/id.24099/title.kanye-west-wanted-to-be-on-tyler-the-creators-ifhy |website=HipHopDX.com |access-date=27 January 2024 |date=27 May 2013}}{{cite web |last=Nostro |first=Lauren |title=Tyler, the Creator Turned Down a Kanye West Feature |url=https://www.complex.com/music/a/lauren-nostro/tyler-the-creator-turned-down-a-kanye-west-feature |website=Complex |access-date=4 January 2024 |date=May 28, 2013}} In July of that year, he would further comment:
"...I played him the album before it was finished and it was a song that he really, really liked on there and he really liked it a lot and he wanted to be on it or whatever. And the way I do features I specifically pick people for what they're featured on. And that song, it was nowhere where creative-wise where I thought he would fit on there. Kanye is one of the only few people in this industry that I consider a friend. I'll probably talk to him once a week and we just—we both have a love for art and we hate a lot of the same stuff. So, I don't want people to think that's a diss or like a side hit when I said I denied him."{{cite web |last=Smith |first=Trevor |title=Tyler, The Creator Explains Why He Turned Down A Kanye West Feature For "IFHY" |url=https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/16308-tyler-the-creator-explains-why-he-turned-down-a-kanye-west-feature-for-ifhy-news |website=HotNewHipHop |access-date=4 January 2024 |date=July 29, 2013}}
Composition and lyrics
"IFHY" features Tyler under his alter-ego Sam struggling through a love-hate relationship after finding out his girlfriend, Salem, has cheated on him with Wolf (one of Tyler's other alter-egos).{{cite web |date=29 March 2013 |title=Tyler, the Creator featuring Pharrell – IFHY Video |url=https://hypebeast.com/2013/3/tyler-the-creator-featuring-pharrell-ifhy-video |access-date=27 January 2024 |website=HypeBeast.com}} The entire story of the Wolf album is centered around the three characters, who all attend "Camp Flog Gnaw", a camp for troubled teens.{{cite web |last=Bassil |first=Ryan |title=The Conspiracy Theorist's Guide to Tyler, the Creator's 'WOLF' Trilogy |url=https://www.vice.com/en/article/the-conspiracy-theorists-guide-to-tyler-the-creators-wolf-trilogy/ |website=Vice.com |access-date=27 January 2024 |date=2 April 2013}}
Craig Jenkins of Pitchfork described "IFHY" as "a bit of Neptunes worship so adroit that its plinking synths and jazzy chord changes give way to a falsettoed coda from Pharrell himself".{{cite web|url=http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/17805-tyler-the-creator-wolf/|title=Tyler, the Creator: Wolf Album Review|work=Pitchfork|last=Jenkins|first=Craig|date=April 1, 2013|access-date=April 1, 2013|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130403233429/http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/17805-tyler-the-creator-wolf/|archive-date=April 3, 2013}} The instrumental of the song has been described as "jazzy" but also intense by multiple critics.{{cite web |last=Grosinger |first=Matt |title=MUSIC GEEK TRACK OF THE WEEK: TYLER, THE CREATOR – "IFHY" |url=https://archive.nerdist.com/music-geek-track-of-the-week-tyler-the-creator-ifhy/ |website=Nerdist.com |access-date=27 January 2024 |date=29 March 2013}}
Music video
= Development =
The video was directed by Tyler under the alias "Wolf Haley", which has been a recurring theme in his videos.{{cite web |author=Devin |title=Video: Tyler, the Creator f/ Pharrell - 'IFHY' |url=https://www.rap-up.com/2013/03/29/video-tyler-the-creator-f-pharrell-ifhy/ |website=Rap-Up.com |access-date=27 January 2024 |date=29 March 2013}} The filming of the video was a long and complicated process, as revealed in an interview with the video's producer Tara Razavi.
...We started talking about it towards the end of last year while Tyler was recording his album, and we just couldn't get to it. The first time we had to push it, we hadn't found the perfect girl. The second time, he had an allergic reaction to a dog... He had a very specific girl in mind; I was reaching out to every single modeling agency in the world, [and] of our top 10 girls, eight of them were on jobs out of the country. Brandy (the final actress) was actually at the top of our list too, but she was out of town. We've done a lot with Tyler, and I've never spent so much time looking for a person who was perfect.{{cite web |title=Tara Razavi Talks Producing Tyler, The Creator's 'IFHY' Video, Finding His Leading Lady |url=https://www.vibe.com/news/entertainment/tara-razavi-talks-producing-tyler-creators-ifhy-video-finding-his-leading-lady-146775/ |website=Vibe.com |access-date=27 January 2024 |date=3 April 2013}}
