History
Inficon was founded in Syracuse, New York by a group of scientists and engineers from General Electric (GE) and Syracuse University (SU), who developed a halogen leak detector in December 1969.{{Cite news|url=http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2014/06/peter_maier_inficon_leadership.html|title=Peter Maier: Leaders look for win-win scenarios to grow their companies|work=syracuse.com|access-date=2017-02-28|language=en-US}}{{Cite book|title=An Introduction to Six Sigma and Process Improvement|last=Evans|first=James|publisher=South-Western College Pub|year=2014|isbn=978-1133604587|pages=58}}{{cite news|url=https://www.newspaperarchive.com/us/new-york/syracuse/syracuse-herald-journal/2000/06-16/page-19?tag=inficon+was+founded&rtserp=tags/inficon-was-founded?psb=relavance|title=Newspaper|date=16 June 2000|publisher=Herald-Journal|agency=Herald-Journal|pages=85|format=PDF|author=James T. In January 1976, Inficon was acquired by Leybold-Heraeus GmbH a vacuum technology company. Due to this acquisition, Inficon became known as Inficon Leybold-Heraeus.{{Cite web|url=https://www.company-detail.com/company-leybold-inficon-inc-388232|title=Leybold Inficon Inc. {{!}} Company-detail.com|website=www.company-detail.com|language=en|access-date=2017-02-28}}{{cite news|url=https://www.newspaperarchive.com/us/new-york/syracuse/syracuse-post-standard/1976/01-08/page-8?tag=inficon&rtserp=tags/inficon?psb=relavance&ndt=by&py=1970&pey=1979&ndt=ex&py=1976|title=Newspaper|date=8 January 1976|publisher=Syracuse Post-Standard|agency=Syracuse Post-Standard|pages=8|format=PDF|author=Staff Writer|access-date=28 February 2017}}
In 1987, Leybold-Heraeus GmbH, the parent company of Inficon, was purchased by Degussa AG, and the name was changed to Leybold AG. At this point, Inficon Leybold-Heraeus became Leybold Inficon, Inc.
In 1993, Oerlikon-Bührle Holding AG (OBH), which owned Balzers AG, reached a deal to buy Leybold AG from Degussa AG. Formed in 1994, Balzers and Leybold Holding AG became the world's largest vacuum and surface technology company as a result of this purchase. Leybold Inficon, Inc. of Syracuse with Balzers Instruments of Liechtenstein and two Leybold instrument groups of Germany then became Balzers and Leybold Instrumentation (BLI).{{cite news|url=https://www.newspaperarchive.com/us/new-york/syracuse/syracuse-post-standard/1993/10-21/page-57?tag=inficon&rtserp=tags/inficon?&ndt=ex&py=1993&pm=10|title=Newspaper|date=21 October 1993|publisher=Syracuse Post-Standard|agency=The Post-Standard|pages=C-6|format=PDF|author=Susan E. In 1998, the Oerlikon-Bührle Group was split up and the core business was renamed Unaxis.{{Cite web|url=https://www.oerlikon.com/en/company/history/text-version/|title=Historical Milestones - Oerlikon Corporate|website=www.oerlikon.com|language=en|access-date=2017-02-28}}
