Design
{{Main|Talwar-class frigate}}
Teg belongs to the {{sclass|Talwar|frigate|4}} of frigates. The Talwar-class guided missile frigates are modified Krivak III-class frigates built by Russia. These ships use stealth technologies and a special hull design to ensure a reduced radar cross section. Much of the equipment on the ship is Russian-made, but a significant number of systems of Indian origin have also been incorporated. The main differences between Teg and the earlier Talwar-class ships are the use of BrahMos missiles in place of the Klub-N missiles and the use of AK-630 instead of Kashtan in the earlier ships.{{cite web|url=https://sputniknews.com/20091127/157012714.html |title=Russia floats out first frigate for Indian Navy |publisher=RIA Novosti |date=27 November 2009 |access-date=6 April 2011}} It is the first of the three frigates built in Russia as a follow-up order to the first batch of Talwar-class frigates.
Construction
Teg was laid down on 27 July 2007 and launched on 27 November 2009. Following post-construction work, she began sea trials in the Baltic Sea on 1 September 2011.{{cite web |title=Russia begins trials of stealth frigate for Indian Navy |url=http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2011-09-01/news/29953755_1_stealth-frigates-new-frigates-talwar-class |work=Economic Times|access-date=10 December 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140202125440/http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2011-09-01/news/29953755_1_stealth-frigates-new-frigates-talwar-class |archive-date=2 February 2014 |date=1 September 2011 |url-status=dead }} During Teg{{'}}s sea trials in mid-October, her port-side turbine was damaged, forcing a two-week delay in her trials schedule while repairs were made.{{cite web |title=Russia: INS Teg Receives New Cruising Turbine at Yantar Shipyard and Continues Sea Trials |url=http://shipbuildingtribune.com/2011/11/16/russia-ins-teg-receives-new-cruising-turbine-at-yantar-shipyard-and-continues-sea-trials/ |publisher=Shipbuilding Tribune |access-date=11 December 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120515124443/http://shipbuildingtribune.com/2011/11/16/russia-ins-teg-receives-new-cruising-turbine-at-yantar-shipyard-and-continues-sea-trials/ |archive-date=15 May 2012 |date=16 November 2011 |url-status=dead }} Teg completed her sea trials in early December 2011, leaving only acceptance trials before her delivery to the Indian Navy in April 2012.{{cite web |title=Indian Navy's Frigate Successfully Passes Last Trials Before Delivery |url=http://shipbuildingtribune.com/2011/12/09/indian-navys-frigate-successfully-passes-last-trials-before-delivery/ |publisher=Shipbuilding Tribune |access-date=11 December 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120430040612/http://shipbuildingtribune.com/2011/12/09/indian-navys-frigate-successfully-passes-last-trials-before-delivery/ |archive-date=30 April 2012 |date=9 December 2011 |url-status=dead }} These trials were completed in early February 2012.{{cite web |title=Yantar Shipyard Finishes Sea Trails (sic) for Indian Navy's Fourth Talwar Class Frigate |url=http://shipbuildingtribune.com/2012/02/08/yantar-shipyard-finishes-sea-trails-for-indian-navys-fourth-talwar-class-frigate/ |publisher=Shipbuilding Tribune |access-date=9 February 2012 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120210094226/http://shipbuildingtribune.com/2012/02/08/yantar-shipyard-finishes-sea-trails-for-indian-navys-fourth-talwar-class-frigate/ |archive-date=10 February 2012 |date=8 February 2012 |url-status=dead }}
