iOS 15 is the fifteenth major release of the iOS mobile operating system developed by Apple for its iPhone and iPod Touch lines of products. It was announced at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 7, 2021, as the successor to iOS 14 and released to the public on September 20, 2021.{{cite web|title=iOS 15 Preview|url=http://www.apple.com/ios/ios-15-preview|access-date=2021-08-20|website=Apple|language=en-US|archive-date=2021-08-19|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210819082125/http://www.apple.com/ios/ios-15-preview/|url-status=live}}
On June 6, 2022 at WWDC 2022, its successor, iOS 16, was announced. iOS 15 was officially succeeded by iOS 16 on September 12, 2022.
iOS 15 is the final version of iOS that supports the iPhone 6s & 6s Plus, first-generation iPhone SE, iPhone 7 & 7 Plus, and seventh-generation iPod Touch, as its successor, iOS 16, drops support for those models, including also the .{{Cite web|title=iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 are compatible with these devices|url=http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213411|access-date=2022-10-24|website=Apple Support|date=24 October 2022|language=en|archive-date=2022-10-24|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221024194707/http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213411|url-status=live}} This means that iOS 15 is the last version to support the iPod Touch. iOS 15 is also the final iOS version to support live wallpapers.
System features
=Focus=
Replacing the dedicated Do Not Disturb feature introduced in iOS 6, Focus is a new feature that allows a user to change their "state", such as Work, Sleep, Do Not Disturb or a custom focus. Based on the selected state, users can set the type of notification they want to receive and from which application. It is also possible to choose which pages and then apps to show on the Home based on the state. The state can change automatically based on where the user is or the time of day.{{cite web|last=Hill|first=Sam|title=How to use Focus Mode on iOS 15|url=https://www.inputmag.com/guides/how-to-use-focus-mode-on-ios-15|access-date=2022-02-11|website=Input|date=13 October 2021|language=en|archive-date=2022-04-09|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220409210839/https://www.inputmag.com/guides/how-to-use-focus-mode-on-ios-15|url-status=live}}
Focus also controls the interactions with Contacts, so it is possible to decide which specific contacts can "disturb" the user.{{cite web|last=Krasnoff|first=Barbara|date=2021-10-15|title=How to use iOS 15's new Focus modes|url=https://www.theverge.com/22726456/ios-15-iphone-focus-distractions-how-to|access-date=2022-02-11|website=The Verge|language=en|archive-date=2022-06-02|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220602194019/https://www.theverge.com/22726456/ios-15-iphone-focus-distractions-how-to|url-status=live}}
Some Lock Screen settings can be controlled based on the state: for example, the Dim Lock Screen feature, which darkens the lock screen from not showing notifications on that screen, can be automatically turned on or off based on the state.{{Citation|title=How to Dim iPhone Lock Screen During Focus Mode in iOS 15|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIQSMxKeLt8|language=en|access-date=2022-02-11|archive-date=2022-04-09|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220409210839/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIQSMxKeLt8|url-status=live}}
Focus is synchronized automatically across different iOS, iPadOS, and macOS devices on the same iCloud account, as well as any paired watchOS devices.{{cite web|title=iOS 15: How to Adjust Home Screen and Lock Screen Settings in Focus Mode|url=https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/adjust-home-screen-lock-screen-settings-focus-ios|access-date=2022-02-11|website=MacRumors|date=27 July 2021|language=en|archive-date=2022-02-11|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220211073138/https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/adjust-home-screen-lock-screen-settings-focus-ios/|url-status=live}}
=Notifications=
Notifications receive a new look with contact photos for all communication apps and larger app icons. When the notification arrives, the user can mute the corresponding app for one hour or all day.{{cite web|title=iOS 15: What's New With Notifications|url=https://www.macrumors.com/guide/ios-15-notifications|access-date=2022-02-11|website=MacRumors|date=11 October 2021|language=en|archive-date=2022-02-11|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220211073139/https://www.macrumors.com/guide/ios-15-notifications/|url-status=live}}
The Summary allows the user to group and postpone the notifications coming from the chosen apps, delivering them at a scheduled time in a single big notification called summary notification.{{cite web|date=2022-02-03|title=iOS 15 Notifications: What's New With Push Notifcations & What to Do|url=https://www.plotprojects.com/blog/ios-15-push-notifications-changes|access-date=2022-02-11|website=Plot Projects|language=en-US|archive-date=2022-02-11|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220211080145/https://www.plotprojects.com/blog/ios-15-push-notifications-changes/|url-status=live}}
=Live Text=
Devices with an A12 chip or later support Live Text, which uses optical character recognition to recognize text in images, allowing copy-and-paste, look-up, and translation in Photos, Screenshot, Quick Look, Safari, and Live Preview with Camera. This feature uses artificial intelligence text recognition using the Neural Engine.{{cite web|title=iOS 15 Live Text feature can copy and paste text from any image|first=Stephen|last=Robles|url=https://appleinsider.com/articles/21/06/09/ios-15-live-text-feature-can-copy-and-paste-text-from-any-image|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210611054942/https://appleinsider.com/articles/21/06/09/ios-15-live-text-feature-can-copy-and-paste-text-from-any-image|archive-date=2021-06-11|date=2021-06-09|website=AppleInsider}}
=Smart stacks with suggested widgets=
The Widgets in iOS 15 are now more dynamic: depending on the context, the system can add or remove widgets to existing stacks. For example, near the start of a certain event in the Calendar, the system can decide to add the Calendar Widget to an existing smart stack, if it is not already present, and then remove it at the end of the event.{{cite web|last=Cipriani|first=Jason|title=Make your iPhone's home screen more useful with a Smart Stack.
