Critical reception

In a 2019 retrospective review, Matthew Hocter from Albumism stated that Turner "delivers some solid club tracks" on Foreign Affair, like "I Don't Wanna Lose You".{{cite web|first= Matthew |last= Hocter |title= Tina Turner's 'Foreign Affair' Turns 30: Anniversary Retrospective |publisher= Albumism |date= September 11, 2019 |access-date= November 16, 2020 |url= https://www.albumism.com/features/tina-turner-foreign-affair-turns-30-anniversary-retrospective}} Bil Carpenter from AllMusic complimented the song as "fine".{{cite web|first= Bil |last= Carpenter |title= Tina Turner – Foreign Affair |publisher= AllMusic |access-date= November 4, 2020 |url= https://www.allmusic.com/album/foreign-affair-mw0000654037}} Upon the release, Rufer & Fell from the Gavin Report commented, "Nothing but the best from Ms. Turner", describing it as "a declaration of possession sung by someone who's experienced her share of "have-nots" in the past."{{cite magazine|first1= Diane |last1= Rufer |first2= Ron |last2= Fell |title= A/C: Reviews |magazine= Gavin Report |date= April 17, 1992 |page= 36 |access-date= October 17, 2020 |url= https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Gavin-Report/90/92/Gavin-1992-04-17.pdf}} In a 2015 review, Pop Rescue declared it as a "great little track", noting Gary Barnacle's "well placed" blast of saxophone.{{cite web|title= Review: "Foreign Affair" by Tina Turner (CD, 1989) |url= https://poprescue.com/2015/09/30/pop-rescue-foreign-affair-by-tina-turner-cd-1989/ |work= Pop Rescue |date= September 30, 2015 |access-date= November 24, 2020}} William Shaw from Smash Hits said, "Actually this is quite good", "a simple, plain, slow yet still sort of perky love song that ambles along in an unsurprising way but which is actually rather charming all the same."{{cite magazine|first=William|last=Shaw|url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/57779449@N02/37530605750/in/album-72157688207936503/|title=Singles|magazine=Smash Hits|date=October 18, 1989|page=77|access-date=March 8, 2023}}
