"I Would Stay" is a song by Dutch pop rock band Krezip. It was released on 16 June 2000 as the second single from the band's debut album Nothing Less.{{Cite web |title=Krezip - I Would Stay - ultratop.be |url=https://www.ultratop.be/nl/song/8026/Krezip-I-Would-Stay |access-date=2024-12-30 |website=www.ultratop.be}}

Written by the band's singer Jacqueline Govaert, the song reached the number one spot of the Dutch Top 40 for three weeks, including during Krezip's highly publicized performance at the 2000 Pinkpop Festival. It was also a number-one hit in the Flanders region of Belgium. It was later declared to be the third-biggest hit of the year per the Dutch Top 40, and also the seventh-biggest hit of the decade per the Dutch Single Top 100.

Background

Lead singer and songwriter Jacqueline Govaert wrote the song when she was 17 years old after getting into arguments with her mother. "I always thought, still actually, now I have it all figured out. I already understand how life works," Govaert said.{{Cite web |title=Jacqueline Govaert schreef Krezips hit I Would Stay na een ruzie met haar moeder |url=https://www.nporadio2.nl/nieuws/top2000/04207a4f-615b-44e6-a4c4-ed281f347f69/jacqueline-govaert-schreef-krezips-hit-i-would-stay-na-een-ruzie-met-haar-moeder |access-date=2024-12-30 |website=NPO Radio 2 |language=nl}}

Krezip's performance at the 2000 Pinkpop Festival, which has been labeled by multiple sources as one of the most iconic in the festival's history, was nationally televised and culminated in the performance of "I Would Stay" near the end of their set.{{Cite web |date=2021-06-22 |title=5 Most iconic Pinkpop shows of all time |url=https://www.getgigit.com/updates/5-iconic-pinkpop-shows |access-date=2024-12-30 |website=Gigit! |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |title=Pinkpop pareltjes [part 1] |url=https://www.npo3fm.nl/nieuws/3fm-nieuws/d30c5896-a233-4a5a-b2b6-63005988f85f/pinkpop-pareltjes-part-1 |access-date=2024-12-30 |website=NPO 3FM |language=nl}} Govaert was 18 years old during the performance.

For a while, Govaerts did not want to perform the song, but she is happy with it again. "Many people recognise themselves in it, it has become a special song for me. And I see that same struggle of your parents breaking away from my own children now. They're ashamed of me in the schoolyard now too," she said in 2023.{{Cite web |title=Jacqueline (Krezip): 'Alles dwarrelt op zijn plek nu ik ouder word' |url=https://www.eo.nl/artikel/jacqueline-krezip-alles-dwarrelt-op-zijn-plek-nu-ik-ouder-word?srsltid=AfmBOopGhkHnaN7ZIK9j5vqPBCmA_dwo0wocS-tmrw4Khu0mpiAgGQ9e |access-date=2024-12-30 |website=www.eo.nl |language=nl}}
