Icelink is a proposed electricity interconnector between Iceland and the United Kingdom via Great Britain. At {{convert|1000|to|1200|km|abbr=in}}, the 800{{ndash}}1,200{{nbsp}}MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link would be the longest sub-sea power interconnector in the world.{{cite web|title=Iceland-UK power interconnector delayed by Brexit|url=http://www.powerengineeringint.com/articles/2016/10/iceland-uk-power-interconnector-delayed-by-brexit.html|publisher=Power Engineering International|accessdate=30 December 2016}}
The project partners for the main proposal are National Grid plc in the UK, Landsvirkjun, the state-owned generator in Iceland, and Landsnet, the Icelandic Transmission System Operator (TSO).{{cite web|title=Interconnectors - Iceland|url=http://www2.nationalgrid.com/About-us/European-business-development/Interconnectors/Iceland/|publisher=National Grid plc|accessdate=30 December 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160721053342/http://www2.nationalgrid.com/About-us/European-business-development/Interconnectors/Iceland/|archive-date=21 July 2016|url-status=dead}} An alternative proposal by Edi Truell's company Disruptive Capital Finance goes by the name "Atlantic SuperConnection", but it requires UK government financing.{{Cite news |last=Collingridge |first=John |title=Edi Truell threatens to pull plug on Teesside’s Atlantic Superconnection cable factory |language=en |url=https://www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/article/edi-truell-threatens-to-pull-plug-on-teessides-atlantic-superconnection-cable-factory-3ftn6snml |access-date=2022-11-27 |issn=0140-0460}}{{Cite web |last=Singer |first=Julian |title=Atlantic Superconnection: importing low carbon electricity from Iceland |url=http://greenbarrel.com/2019/06/06/atlantic-superconnection-importing-low-carbon-electricity-from-iceland/ |access-date=2022-11-27 |website=GreenBarrel.com |language=en-US}}
According to Landsvirkjun, it will take about five years to complete feasibility and other work, and if a decision is made to go ahead, construction and installation would take a further five to six years.
The cost is as of 2023 expected to be €3.5 bn ($3.8 bn), for the cable and stations, not counting additional power plants.[https://www.globaldata.com/store/report/landsnet-landsvirkjun-power-national-grid-icelink-power-interconnector-line-iceland-profile-snapshot/ Landsnet/ Landsvirkjun Power/ National Grid – IceLink Power Interconnector Line – Iceland]
Status
In 2017, the main proposal for the project was still at the feasibility stage, and, {{As of|2019|lc=on}}, no further progress had been reported.{{cite web |title=Submarine Cable to Europe: Overview of IceLink |url=https://www.landsvirkjun.com/researchdevelopment/submarinecabletoeurope |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200124224840/https://www.landsvirkjun.com/researchdevelopment/submarinecabletoeurope |url-status=dead |archive-date=24 January 2020 |website=Landsvirkjun: projects |publisher=Landsvirkjun |accessdate=6 January 2020 }} As of 2019, the "Atlantic SuperConnection" proposal had still not obtained the required financial support from the UK government.
The link is highly controversial in Icelandic politics, with a fear of environmental effects associated with increasing Iceland's power supply to meet Icelink's demand, as well as concerns over increased domestic energy prices in Iceland. For the project to move forward, the Icelandic parliament needs to accept the construction, which as of 2022 is not likely.{{Cite web |first=Arnar Páll |last=Hauksson |date=22 August 2019 |title=Sæstrengur ekki lengur samkeppnishæfur? |trans-title=Submarine cable no longer competitive? |url=https://www.ruv.is/frett/saestrengur-ekki-lengur-samkeppnishaefur |access-date=28 February 2022 |website=RÚV |language=is}}
Northern Ireland variant
At the 2019 UK General Election 2019, the Democratic Unionist Party included in their manifesto a proposal for Icelink to make landfall in Northern Ireland.{{Cite news|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2019-50602605|title = Election 2019: Digging into NI parties' manifestos|work = BBC News|date = 7 December 2019 |access-date=28 April 2022}}
