Ichthyapus insularis is an eel in the family Ophichthidae ("snake eels").{{FishBase |Ichthyapus|insularis}} It was described by John E. McCosker in 2004.{{cite journal|author=McCosker, J. E.|date= 23 April 2004|title=A new species of finless snake eel (Anguilliformes: Ophichthidae) from Ascension Island, with comments on Ichthyapus acutirostris |journal=Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences |volume= 55 |issue=7|pages=169–173}} It is a tropical saltwater eel found only around Ascension Island in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean. It is known to dwell at a depth range of {{convert|0|to|1|m|ft}} and lives among rocks and sand. Males can reach a total length of {{convert|42.7|cm|in}}.
The species epithet "insularis", meaning "island" in Latin, refers to Ascension Island, to which I. insularis seems to be endemic.
