The road continues eastward as National Forest Road No. 7623.{{cite web|author=Idaho Transportation Department|author-link=Idaho Transportation Department|url=http://itd.idaho.gov/hmg/SignIndx.htm|title=Idaho Highway Historical Marker Guide Index|date=May 26, 2005|access-date=2008-12-27|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081215223302/http://itd.idaho.gov/hmg/SignIndx.htm|archive-date=December 15, 2008|df=}}

History

In the 1930s, Route 4 was envisioned as a cross-state route, to directly connect Wallace to Thompson Falls, Montana over Glidden Pass, as seen on the 1937 map (later routed over Cooper Pass).{{cite map |author1= Texaco |author-link= Texaco |author2= Rand McNally and Company |author2-link= Rand McNally and Company |url = http://www.davidrumsey.com/maps920003-23818.html |title= Road map: Idaho, Mont., Wyo.|year= 1937 |scale= |location= Chicago |publisher=Rand McNally}}{{full citation needed|date=April 2017}} This plan was abandoned due to impassable roads and World War II. Paved SH-4 was truncated at Burke.

National Forest Road 7623 still connects Burke to Montana Secondary Highway 471 leading to Thompson Falls.
