Its fossils have been found in Templeton California.{{cite web |title=Templeton (Miocene of the United States) |url=https://paleobiodb.org/classic/basicCollectionSearch?collection_no=45495&is_real_user=1 |website=PBDB}} Idiophyseter was small in size compared to modern genera and its maxilla has single-rooted alveoli.
