History

File:Immingham Engine Shed and Coaling Tower 1964.jpg
The engine shed was built by the Humber Commercial Dock and Railway company in the southeastern corner of the Immingham Dock estate. As initially built{{sfn|Mummery|Butler|1999|pp=99–101}} the engine shed had twelve "roads" (tracks){{sfn|King|2019|pp=50-58}} providing facilities for 60 locomotives.{{sfn|The Engineer|17 May 1912|loc=p.513, col.1; p.512, map}}
The railways at Immingham were worked by the Great Central Railway, the developer of the Port.{{sfn|Dow|1965|loc=especially Chapters 9&10}} In 1923 it was taken over by the LNER and then became part of the Eastern Region of British Railways in 1948.
During the LNER period (1930s) a concrete automatic coaling stage was added to the facilities.{{NHLE|num=1419878|desc =Coaling Tower|access-date=3 August 2015 }}{{sfn|Jackson|Russell|1986|page=79}}
During the British Railways period the facility had a shed code of 40B{{cite journal| journal = The Journal of the Great Central Railway Society| number = 157 | date = September 2008| page = 9| title = Demolition of Immingham steam shed }}, reproduced from The Railway Magazine, September 2008 and had two sub-sheds: New Holland{{sfn|ABC|2006|loc=ER Shedcodes}}{{sfn|Ludlam|1996|pp=49–56}} and Grimsby.
At its peak the shed had an allotment of over 120 locomotives,{{sfn|Bates|Bairstow|2005|page=97}} with 12 stabling roads{{sfn|Ludlam|2006|p=432}}{{sfn|King|Hewins|1989|loc=Photos 103–8}} – part of the building was demolished in the 1950s and a diesel depot constructed.{{sfn|Mitchell|Smith|2017|loc=Photo 95}}
Soon after opening a dormitory block was built near the turntable for use by visiting crews on lodging turns.{{sfn|Ludlam|2006|pp=433–4}}{{sfn|Mummery|Butler|1999|pp=111–113}}{{sfn|King|Hewins|1989|loc=Photo 29}}{{sfn|Jackson|1996|pp=132–3}}{{sfn|Ludlam|2016|pp=36-7}}
A new {{convert|78|ft|9|in}} x {{convert|367|ft|6|in}} diesel shed was built in 1966 south east of the steam shed, which was converted to wagon repair.{{sfn|King|Hewins|1989|loc=Photo 43}} In 1966 it had 90 diesels, plus 35 shunters.Railway Magazine November 1966 p. 620
Steam locomotive types deployed include LNER Thompson Class B1, LMS Stanier Class 8F, and BR standard class 9F.{{cite web| url= http://www.leytransport.i12.com/immingha.htm | title=IMMINGHAM PASSENGER TRAINS | first=John | last=Jennison | archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20061022134301/http://www.leytransport.i12.com/immingha.htm | archive-date=22 October 2006}}
The last steam locomotive worked from the shed was No.61058 (LNER B1) on 7 February 1966, which hauled a train of empty wagons to Markham Colliery.{{cite news| url = http://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/End-era-Immingham/story-19546830-detail/story.html| title = End of and era at Immingham| date = 2 July 2013| work = Grimsby Telegraph |access-date=3 August 2015}}
Following the splitting up of the former BR Trainload business into three companies in 1994, the depot came briefly under the control of "shadow privatisation company" Loadhaul.{{cite journal|title = Loadhaul| journal = Railfan & Railroad| volume = 15| page =44|year = 1996}} Loadhaul was acquired and merged into English Welsh & Scottish in 1995.
The TOPS depot code for the EWS/DB Schenker depot at Immingham is IM, and for the Freightliner Traction Maintenance Depot at Immingham, IN.{{cite web| url = http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/depots/depots1.shtm| title = Two character TOPS depot codes| access-date = 3 August 2015}}{{cite web| url=https://www.rcts.org.uk/about/news/sheds.htm| title = TOPS Depot Codes| publisher = Railway Correspondence and Travel Society| access-date = 3 August 2015}}
As a result of centralisation of maintenance activities by EWS to Toton TMD the shed was used only for storage of out of service locomotives.
