Rolling Stone wrote: "If Jones once wrote catchy pop songs, he's now drifting into intricate orchestration, slick production and melodrama."{{cite journal |last1=Wright |first1=Christian |title=In the Running by Howard Jones |journal=Rolling Stone |date=May 14, 1992 |issue=630 |page=103}} The Chicago Tribune noted that "Jones aims for social statements as a catharsis for change, but the lyrical territory is well-trodden." The Washington Post deemed the album "mainstream, mid-tempo pop-rock."{{cite news |last1=Jenkins |first1=Mark |title=Jones Synthesizing Jacksonian Ideals |work=The Washington Post |date=17 Apr 1992 |page=N18}}
