The definition of inclusive growth implies direct links between the macroeconomic and microeconomic determinants of the economy and economic growth. The microeconomic dimension captures the importance of structural transformation for economic diversification and competition, while the macro dimension refers to changes in economic aggregates such as the country’s gross national product (GNP) or gross domestic product (GDP), total factor productivity, and aggregate factor inputs.Elena Ianchovichina and Susanna Lundstrom, [https://web.archive.org/web/20110125031120/http://siteresources.worldbank.org/INTDEBTDEPT/Resources/468980-1218567884549/WhatIsInclusiveGrowth20081230.pdf "What is Inclusive Growth?"], The World Bank, February 10, 2009.

Sustainable economic growth requires inclusive growth. Maintaining this is sometimes difficult because economic growth may give rise to negative externalities, such as a rise in corruption, which is a major problem in developing countries. Nonetheless, an emphasis on inclusiveness—especially on equality of opportunity in terms of access to markets, resources, and an unbiased regulatory environment—is an essential ingredient of successful growth. The inclusive growth approach takes a longer-term perspective, as the focus is on productive employment as a means of increasing the incomes of poor and excluded groups and raising their standards of living.Elena Ianchovichina and Susanna Lundstrom, 2009. Barriers

Many negative externalities of growth are fundamentally at odds with the target of inclusiveness,{{cite web |last1=Devarajan |first1=Shantayanan |title=The future of inclusive growth |url=https://www.brookings.edu/articles/the-future-of-inclusive-growth/ |website=Brookings |access-date=16 January 2024}} which further makes the situation complex. In many real life cases, inclusiveness carries much less weight than economic growth itself, and sometimes sacrificed thoroughly.{{cite news |title=The case for inclusive growth {{!}} McKinsey |url=https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/public-sector/our-insights/the-case-for-inclusive-growth |access-date=16 January 2024 |work=www.mckinsey.com |date=April 28, 2021}}{{cite journal |last1=Demirguc-Kunt |first1=Asli |last2=Klapper |first2=Leora |last3=Singer |first3=Dorothe |title=Financial Inclusion and Inclusive Growth: A Review of Recent Empirical Evidence |journal=Policy Research Working Papers |date=April 2017 |doi=10.1596/1813-9450-8040 |s2cid=157583912 |url=https://openknowledge.worldbank.org/entities/publication/b90d407a-b789-5cbd-9f43-6e6f5438b8da |access-date=16 January 2024|hdl=10986/26479 |hdl-access=free }}{{cite journal |last1=Heshmati |first1=Almas |last2=Kim |first2=Jungsuk |last3=Wood |first3=Jacob |title=A Survey of Inclusive Growth Policy |journal=Economies |date=September 2019 |volume=7 |issue=3 |pages=65 |doi=10.3390/economies7030065 |doi-access=free |language=en |issn=2227-7099|hdl=10419/256997 |hdl-access=free }}
