Independence is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Tate County, Mississippi, United States.

The settlement is approximately {{convert|7|mi|km}} south of Cockrum and {{convert|11|mi|km}} east of Coldwater along Mississippi Highway 305.

History

The settlement was first known as "Flewellenes Crossroads" and "Buck Snorts".{{cite book | title = Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Mississippi | publisher = Goodspeed Publishing Company | year = 1891 | url = https://books.google.com/books?id=G-pEAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA3 | volume = 1 | pages = 638}}

During the Civil War, R.W. Locke organized a company of soldiers in Buck Snorts, which was dispatched to Virginia where they became Company D of the 42d Mississippi Infantry Regiment. By 1907, Independence had a post office, several stores/businesses, two churches, and a public school.
