InfiniDB is a scalable database built for big data analytics, business intelligence, data warehousing and other read-intensive applications. InfiniDB's column-store architecture enables very quick load and query times.{{cite web|author=Vadim Tkachenko |url=http://www.mysqlperformanceblog.com/2010/01/07/star-schema-bechmark-infobright-infinidb-and-luciddb/ |title=Star Schema {{sic|nolink=y|Bechmark}}: InfoBright, InfiniDB and LucidDB - Percona Database Performance Blog |website=Mysqlperformanceblog.com |date= January 8, 2010|accessdate=2017-01-17}} Its massive parallel processing (MPP) technology scales with any type of storage hardware.{{cite web|url=http://www.infinidb.org/blogs/view/81-infinidb-to-1-trillion-rows-1039909436172- |title=InfiniDB to 1 Trillion Rows ( 1,039,909,436,172 ) | www.infinidb.org | Rows, Infinidb, Comment, Tommaney, Jim |accessdate=2011-12-13 |url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20111213162106/http://www.infinidb.org/blogs/view/81-infinidb-to-1-trillion-rows-1039909436172- |archivedate=December 13, 2011 |df=mdy-all }}

Columnar databases

By storing and managing data based on columns rather than rows, column-oriented architecture overcomes query limitations that exist in traditional row-based RDBMS. Only the necessary columns in a query are accessed, reducing I/O activities by skipping unneeded columns.{{cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTKcAdrjt1Y |title="The Right Workloads for Columnar Databases" - Jim Tommaney, CTO of Calpont |publisher=YouTube |date=2011-09-26 |accessdate=2017-01-17}}

InfiniDB is accessed through a MySQL interface.{{cite web|url=http://www.information-management.com/gallery/-10021367-1.html?start=21 |title=2011 Product Review Roundup |website=Information-management.com |date= |accessdate=2017-01-17}} It then parallelizes queries and executes in a MapReduce fashion (similar in concept to the methodology used by Apache Hadoop).{{cite web|url=http://tm.durusau.net/?cat=666 |title=InfiniDB « Another Word For It |website=Tm.durusau.net |date=2011-09-21 |accessdate=2017-01-17}} Each thread within the distributed architecture operates independently, avoiding thread-to-thread or node-to-node communication that can cripple scaling.{{cite web|url=http://infinidb.org/blogs/view/93-a-behind-the-scenes-look-at-infinidb-part-2-of-3 |title=A Behind the Scenes look at InfiniDB: Parallelism (Part 2 of 3) | www.infinidb.org | Modules, Infinidb, Performance, User, Cust |accessdate=2012-01-10 |url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120109054657/http://infinidb.org/blogs/view/93-a-behind-the-scenes-look-at-infinidb-part-2-of-3 |archivedate=January 9, 2012 |df=mdy-all }}
