The Inman River rises on the eastern slopes of the Mount Lofty Range and its headwaters drain the Inman Valley as the river flows southeast towards its mouth emptying into Encounter Bay on the southern side of Victor Harbor. The river descends {{convert|142|m}} over its {{convert|26|km|adj=on}} course.

Etymology

The Inman River was named through association with Inspector Henry Inman, founder and first commander of the South Australia Police, who pursued two allegedly escaped convicts there in August 1838.{{cite book |title=Inman: first commander of the SA Police |first=Max |last=Slee |publisher=Seaview Press |location=Adelaide |year=2010 |pages=80–84 }} Two indigenous names are recorded for the river: Moo-oola and Moogoora.{{cite book |author=Cockburn, Rodney |title=What’s in a Name? |location=Adelaide |publisher=Ferguson Publications |year=1984 |page=106}}{{cite book |author=Cooper, H. M. |title=Australian Aboriginal Words |location=Adelaide |publisher=South Australian Museum |year=1952 }} The mouth was called Mugurank, meaning 'place of hammerstones'.{{cite book |author=Manning, Geoffrey H. |title=Manning’s Place Names of South Australia |publisher=G. H. Manning |location=Adelaide |year=1990 |page=95 }}

Selwyn Rock, named after Alfred Richard Cecil Selwyn who first discovered it in 1859, is a glaciated pavement in the bed of the river near the settlement of Inman Valley which clearly shows evidence of Glacial striation.
