Based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, IAPTI was established on 30 September 2009.{{cite news |url=http://www.laht.com/article.asp?ArticleId=344753&CategoryId=14093 |title=International Translators Association Launched in Argentina |work=Latin American Herald Tribune |accessdate=23 November 2016 |archive-date=9 September 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180909073931/http://www.laht.com/article.asp?ArticleId=344753&CategoryId=14093 |url-status=dead }} Created by a group of professional language mediators as a vehicle for promoting ethical practices in translation and interpretation{{cite web |url=http://www.lexis.pro/news/global/addressing-issues-of-concern-in-the-translation-and-interpretation-industry/|title=Addressing issues of concern in the translation and interpretation industry|website=Lexis.pro|access-date=23 November 2016}} and providing a forum for discussing problems typical of the globalized world, such as crowdsourcing, outsourcing, bad rates and other abuse.{{cite web |url=http://www.fundeu.es/noticia/nueva-asociacion-profesional-fomentara-el-ejercicio-etico-de-la-traduccion-y-la-interpretacion-2469/ |title=New association will promote ethical practices in translating and interpreting |publisher=Fundéu |date=30 September 2009|language=es}} Technological-ethical issues are also important to IAPTI, such as the exploitation of language professionals as cheap proofreaders of machine-translated texts.

It was founded by Aurora Humarán, an Argentinian sworn translator, Corresponding Member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language,{{cite web |url=https://www.facebook.com/IAPTI/videos/1671449429581741/ |title=Interview of Aurora Humarán to Gerardo Piña-Rosales, ANLE's Director |website=Facebook |accessdate=18 August 2018|language=es}}{{cite web |url=http://www.anle.us/390/Aurora-Humar%C3%A1n.html |title=Aurora Humarán |publisher=North American Academy of the Spanish Language |accessdate=26 December 2016 |language=es |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180818214559/http://www.anle.us/390/Aurora-Humar%C3%A1n.html |archive-date=18 August 2018 |url-status=dead }} and marketing specialist.{{cite web |url=http://wantwords.co.uk/school/people-who-rock-the-industry-aurora-humaran/ |last=Stelmaszak |first=Marta |title=People who rock: Aurora Humarán |website=Wantwords.co.uk |access-date=24 December 2016 |archive-date=23 June 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190623064159/http://wantwords.co.uk/school/people-who-rock-the-industry-aurora-humaran/ |url-status=dead }}

IAPTI applied for registration as a civil association in the City of Buenos Aires (Argentina). Its legal registration under the name "International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters" took a long time to process with the Office of the Argentine Inspector-General for Justice.{{Cite web|url=https://www.iapti.org/association/|title=IAPTI - International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters|website=www.iapti.org|access-date=23 November 2016|archive-date=22 March 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190322045658/https://www.iapti.org/association/|url-status=dead}} On 23 February 2017 it was announced that the Inspector-General for Justice has finally approved IAPTI as a civil association.{{Cite web|url=https://www.iapti.org/news/not122-iapti-is-approved-by-igj-as-a-civil-association.html|title=IAPTI approved by IGJ|website=www.iapti.org|access-date=11 March 2017|archive-date=23 June 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190623064159/https://www.iapti.org/news/not122-iapti-is-approved-by-igj-as-a-civil-association.html|url-status=dead}}

According to its bylaws, the Association is directed and managed by a Board of Directors made up of the six following officers: President, Vice President, Secretary General, Treasurer, two Voting Members and two Alternate Voting Members.{{Cite web|url=https://www.iapti.org/bylaws/|title=IAPTI bylaws|website=www.iapti.org|access-date=23 November 2016}}

In November 2016, a number of staff members stepped down from their positions, including its former Ethics Committee president, claiming IAPTI's legal status controversy, unaccountability and lack of transparency of IAPTI,{{Cite web|url=http://anmerkungen-des-uebersetzers.com/2016/11/01/resigning-iapti/|title=Why we are resigning from IAPTI|date=1 November 2016|website=Anmerkungen des Übersetzers|access-date=2 December 2016}} as well as its failure to hold elections since its establishment.{{Cite news|url=https://slator.com/industry-news/translator-association-iapti-in-hot-water-over-resignations/|title=Translator Association IAPTI in Hot Water Over Resignations |date=20 December 2016|newspaper=Slator|language=en-US|access-date=23 December 2016}} As a response, IAPTI’s board informed that several modifications of its bylaws had been made to accommodate the requirements of the Argentine regulatory authority, and dismissed the claims as baseless, unfounded charges by some of its former members.{{cite web |url=https://www.iapti.org/news/not119-iaptis-board-statement.html |title=IAPTI's Board Statement|website=www.iapti.org|date=2 December 2016|accessdate=16 December 2016}} Some months later, the Argentine regulator finally approved IAPTI.
