Criticism and controversy
In April 2023, the journal published a paper which criticized guidelines set by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, claiming that radiation from cell phones presents a "health threat is scientifically documented at many levels and acknowledged by industries".{{Cite journal |last1=Héroux |first1=Paul |last2=Belyaev |first2=Igor |last3=Chamberlin |first3=Kent |last4=Dasdag |first4=Suleyman |last5=De Salles |first5=Alvaro Augusto Almeida |last6=Rodriguez |first6=Claudio Enrique Fernandez |last7=Hardell |first7=Lennart |last8=Kelley |first8=Elizabeth |last9=Kesari |first9=Kavindra Kumar |last10=Mallery-Blythe |first10=Erica |last11=Melnick |first11=Ronald L. |last12=Miller |first12=Anthony B. |last13=Moskowitz |first13=Joel M. |date=2023-04-04 |title=Cell Phone Radiation Exposure Limits and Engineering Solutions |journal=International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health |language=en |volume=20 |issue=7 |pages=5398 |doi=10.3390/ijerph20075398 |issn=1660-4601|doi-access=free |pmid=37048013 |pmc=10094704 }} The paper claimed that "there are no adequate health effects studies on the projected evolution of wireless systems such as 5G", and that "the effects of 1G to 4G systems have been ignored". The paper questioned whether health guidelines set out by the World Health Organization were independent of the telecommunications industry.
