During the 1990s, outdials were a way to connect to distant bulletin board systems without incurring per-minute charges from one's long-distance carrier. For a time, the online zine Phrack maintained a list of Internet outdials, many of which were hosted by universities.{{cite magazine |url=http://phrack.org/issues/47/6.html |title=What are some Internet Outdials? |date=15 April 1995 |editor-last=Bloodaxe |editor-first=Erik |magazine=Phrack |volume=6 |issue=47 |at=File 6 |access-date=2018-02-19}}
