Background

In June 2018, Belgian police intercepted 36-year-old Nassimeh Naami and 40-year-old Amir Saadouni driving from Antwerp and carrying a detonator and half-a-kilo of TATP explosives. They, 57-year-old Mehrdad Arefani, and Assadollah Assadi, 49, were charged with attempting to carry out a terrorist attack in Paris.{{Cite news| url= https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20201127-belgium-tries-iranian-diplomat-over-bomb-plot| title= Belgium tries Iranian diplomat over bomb plot| work= France 24| access-date= 2021-01-14| archive-date= 2020-12-07| archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20201207122803/https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20201127-belgium-tries-iranian-diplomat-over-bomb-plot| url-status= live}}

According to prosecutors, Assadollah Asadi "was carrying out a plan organized by Iran’s intelligence services" to "blow up a rally in France of a prominent opposition group to the Iranian government."{{Cite news | url= https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/27/world/europe/iran-dissidents-bomb-assadi-belgium.html | title= Iranian Diplomat Accused of Plotting to Bomb Dissidents Goes on Trial in Belgium | work= The New York Times | date= 27 November 2020 | access-date= 2021-01-14 | archive-date= 2021-07-10 | archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20210710195710/https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/27/world/europe/iran-dissidents-bomb-assadi-belgium.html | url-status= live | last1= Erlanger | first1= Steven }}

Belgian prosecutors "showed how Assadi had brought the professionally assembled 550-gm TATP bomb on a commercial flight to Vienna from Tehran in his diplomatic bag and passed it, together with an envelope containing €22,000 (about US$27,000), to two co-conspirators.{{Cite web| url= https://www.upi.com/Top_News/Voices/2020/12/21/EUs-policy-on-Iran-is-a-history-of-failure/8961608556235/| title= EU's policy on Iran is a history of failure| website= www.upi.com| access-date= 2021-01-14| archive-date= 2021-01-19| archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20210119075757/https://www.upi.com/Top_News/Voices/2020/12/21/EUs-policy-on-Iran-is-a-history-of-failure/8961608556235/| url-status= live}} Assadi instructed them how to prime and detonate the device. France stated that it blamed Iran's intelligence ministry for the foiled bomb plot, freezing assets of two senior Iranian officials.{{Cite news|url=https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-55931633|title=France bomb plot: Iran diplomat Assadollah Assadi sentenced to 20 years|work=BBC News|access-date=2021-02-08|archive-date=2021-02-10|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210210002605/https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-55931633|url-status=live}}

Verdict

All four defendants (Assadollah Assadi, Amir Saadouni, Nasimeh Naami, Mehrdad Arefani) were found guilty. Assadi was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment on 4 February 2021. Naami was sentenced to 18 years, Saadouni 15, and Arefani 17.

While Assadi was entitled to diplomatic immunity where applicable, it was deemed that he was not protected when he was arrested as he was on holiday (in Germany) outside the country where he was posted and hence protected. A lawyer for the prosecution commented after the trial "The ruling shows two things: a diplomat doesn't have immunity for criminal acts ... and the responsibility of the Iranian state in what could have been carnage."{{Cite news |title=Belgian court sentences Iranian diplomat to 20 years over bomb plot |last=Boffey |first=Daniel |newspaper=The Guardian |date=4 February 2021 |url=https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/feb/04/assadollah-assadi-belgian-court-sentences-iranian-diplomat-20-years-french-bomb-plot |access-date=4 February 2021 |archive-date=9 February 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210209223953/https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/feb/04/assadollah-assadi-belgian-court-sentences-iranian-diplomat-20-years-french-bomb-plot |url-status=live }}

The semi-official Iranian Students News Agency was told by a spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry in January 2021 that Assadi's diplomatic immunity had been violated and that he had been a victim of a western trap. Maryam Rajavi (head of National Council of Resistance of Iran) said the conviction was "a brilliant victory for the people and resistance of Iran and a heavy political and diplomatic defeat for the regime". She also said "the plot had been authorised at the highest levels in Iran, by the president and supreme leader and that the intelligence ministry had been given the task of carrying it out."

Aftermath

In May 2021, an appeal in Belgium was dropped. {{Cite news |title=Iran envoy drops appeal to jail in Belgium, no prisoner swap seen |newspaper=Swiss Info |url=https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/iran-envoy-drops-appeal-to-jail-in-belgium--no-prisoner-swap-seen/46592154 |access-date=2021-05-12 |archive-date=2021-05-12 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210512111210/https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/iran-envoy-drops-appeal-to-jail-in-belgium--no-prisoner-swap-seen/46592154 |url-status=dead }} In May 2023 it was announced that a prisoner swap took place in Oman where Assadi was exchanged for Belgian aid worker Olivier Vandecasteele.{{Cite news |title=Olivier Vandecasteele est libre : un échange avec le diplomate iranien Assadi a été effectué à Oman |newspaper=La Libre |url=https://www.lalibre.be/belgique/2023/05/26/olivier-vandecasteele-est-libre-un-echange-avec-le-diplomate-iranien-assadi-a-ete-effectue-a-oman-ZOZQMDYGJJBXZJKUYLZ7GG4QMM/ |access-date=2024-01-05 |archive-date=2023-05-27 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230527080113/https://www.lalibre.be/belgique/2023/05/26/olivier-vandecasteele-est-libre-un-echange-avec-le-diplomate-iranien-assadi-a-ete-effectue-a-oman-ZOZQMDYGJJBXZJKUYLZ7GG4QMM/ |url-status=live }}
