It was earlier regarded as a headland of Nordaustlandet, but after the retreat of Austfonna, it became apparent that the point was on a separate small island.{{cite book |title=Arctic Pilot: Sailing directions Svalbard–Jan Mayen |year=1988 | volume =7 |publisher=The Norwegian Hydrographic Service and The Norwegian Polar Institute |location=Stavanger |language= |isbn=82-90653-06-9 |page=336 }}{{cite web |url=http://placenames.npolar.no/stadnamn/Isispynten |title=Isispynten (Svalbard) |publisher=Norwegian Polar Institute |accessdate=4 July 2013}}
