Background
"It's Sad to Belong" is the second track on Dowdy Ferry Road. It is one of only two songs on the album not written by either singer.[http://www.allmusic.com/album/dowdy-ferry-road-r6797/review "Dowdy Ferry Road - England Dan & John Ford Coley"]. allmusic.com. Retrieved 2011-01-04.
The song has been called "bittersweet", telling the story of a married man falling in love with another woman and knowing they cannot be together. Dale Van Atta of the Deseret News observed that it is "the universal divorce anthem - about the alleged monotony of monogamy" and that the duo "[reduces] it to a simple, peaceful chorus" (referring to the line, Yes, it's sad to belong to someone else when the right one comes along).Van Atta, Dale. The Deseret News, June 10, 1977, p. 20.
Billboard described the song as a "sweetly catchy ballad."{{cite news|title=Top Single Picks|newspaper=Billboard|accessdate=2020-07-12|page=70|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Billboard/70s/1977/Billboard%201977-05-14.pdf|date=May 14, 1977}} Cash Box said "The strong point is their seamless harmony, easing a catchy chorus through several refrains."{{cite news|title=CashBox Singles Reviews|date=May 7, 1977|page=22|newspaper=Cash Box|accessdate=2021-12-26|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Cash-Box/70s/1977/CB-1977-05-07.pdf}} Record World said that "the latest single by this duo deals with the 'trying to love two' theme in a way that should find listeners in pop, MOR and country formats in short order."{{cite magazine|magazine=Record World|date=May 7, 1977|accessdate=2023-02-16|title=Hits of the Week|page=1|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Record-World/70s/77/Record-World-1977-05-07.pdf}}
