The Jabiru J170 is an Australian ultralight and light-sport aircraft, designed and produced by Jabiru Aircraft. The aircraft is supplied as a kit for amateur construction or as a complete ready-to-fly-aircraft.Bayerl, Robby; Martin Berkemeier; et al: World Directory of Leisure Aviation 2011-12, page 61. Design and development
The J170 was derived from the Jabiru J160, by using the J160 fuselage and the wings from the Jabiru J430 plus a bigger elevator to give it a better rate of climb at higher density altitudes. It was designed to comply with the US light-sport aircraft rules at a gross weight of {{convert|600|kg|lb|0|abbr=on}}. The J170 features a strut-braced high-wing with winglets, a two-seats-in-side-by-side configuration enclosed cockpit, fixed tricycle landing gear and a single engine in tractor configuration.{{cite web|url = http://www.sportpilot.org/learn/slsa/|title = EAA's Listing of Special Light-Sport Aircraft|accessdate = 1 June 2012|last = Experimental Aircraft Association|date = 2012|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20140228070151/http://sportpilot.org/learn/slsa|archive-date = 28 February 2014|url-status = dead}}{{cite web|url = http://www.jabiru.net.au/factory-built-aircraft/j170d|title = Jabiru J170|accessdate = 23 July 2012|last = Jabiru Aircraft|year = 2005|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20120728203511/http://www.jabiru.net.au/factory-built-aircraft/j170d|archive-date = 28 July 2012|url-status = dead}}
The aircraft is made from composites. Its {{convert|9.66|m|ft|1|abbr=on}} span wet wing has an area of {{convert|9.56|m2|sqft|abbr=on}}, a fuel capacity of {{convert|135|L}} and flaps. The standard engine available is the {{convert|85|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} Jabiru 2200 four-stroke powerplant.{{cite web|url = http://www.jabiru.net.au/images/J170C/J170-Flyer-B-Ver-2.gif|archive-url = https://archive.today/20121231180303/http://www.jabiru.net.au/images/J170C/J170-Flyer-B-Ver-2.gif|url-status = dead|archive-date = 2012-12-31|title = J170 Specifications|accessdate = 23 July 2012|last = Jabiru Aircraft|date = n.d.}}
The J170 complies with both the US light-sport rules and United Kingdom BCAR Section "S" requirements. In Canada it qualifies as an Advanced Ultralight at a gross weight of {{convert|560|kg|lb|0|abbr=on}}{{Cite web|url = http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/standards/general-ccarcs-advancedullist-2036.htm|title = Listing of Models Eligible to be Registered as Advanced Ultra-Light Aeroplanes (AULA)|accessdate = 15 July 2012|last = Transport Canada|date = 27 March 2012}}
