The Jabiru J230 is an Australian light-sport aircraft, designed and produced by Jabiru Aircraft. The aircraft is supplied as a kit for amateur construction or as a complete ready-to-fly aircraft.Vandermeullen, Richard: 2012 Kit Aircraft Buyer's Guide, Kitplanes, Volume 28, Number 12, December 2011, page 57. Design and development
The J230 is a two-seat development of the four-seat Jabiru J430, optimized for the US light-sport category, which is restricted to two seats. The J230 uses the same wings and fuselage as the J430, but deletes the back seats, leaving a large baggage compartment. While the J430 has a gross weight of {{convert|1540|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}}, the J230 is restricted to a gross weight of {{convert|1320|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}}.{{cite web|url = http://www.jabiru.net.au/aircraft-kits/j230-kit|title = Jabiru J230/J430 Amateur Built Kitplanes|accessdate = 13 November 2012|last = Jabiru Aircraft|year = 2005}}
The J230 features a strut-braced high-wing, a two-seats-in-side-by-side configuration enclosed cockpit with a large rear baggage compartment, fixed tricycle landing gear and a single engine in tractor configuration. The cockpit is {{convert|44|in|cm|0|abbr=on}} wide
The aircraft is made from composites. Its {{convert|31.3|ft|m|1|abbr=on}} span wing has an area of {{convert|103|sqft|m2|abbr=on}} and mounts flaps. The aircraft's recommended installed engine power {{convert|120|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} and the standard engine used is the {{convert|120|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} Jabiru 3300 four-stroke powerplant. Construction time from the supplied kit is estimated as 600 hours. The design is approved for night flying.
The J230 has a standard empty weight of {{convert|816|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}}, which combined with a full fuel capacity of {{convert|216|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} and a gross weight of {{convert|1320|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} leaves {{convert|288|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} for crew, passenger and cargo with full fuel.{{cite web|url = http://www.jabiru.net.au/factory-built-aircraft/j230d|title = Jabiru J230|accessdate = 13 November 2012|last = Jabiru Aircraft|year = 2005|archive-date = 14 November 2012|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20121114074355/http://www.jabiru.net.au/factory-built-aircraft/j230d|url-status = dead}}
The J230 is listed on the Federal Aviation Administration's list of approved special light-sport aircraft.{{cite web|url=http://www.faa.gov/aircraft/gen_av/light_sport/media/SLSA_Directory.xls |title=SLSA Make/Model Directory |accessdate=13 November 2012 |last=Federal Aviation Administration |date=12 October 2012 |url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130516004527/http://www.faa.gov/aircraft/gen_av/light_sport/media/SLSA_Directory.xls |archivedate=16 May 2013 }}{{cite web|url = http://www.sportpilot.org/learn/slsa/|title = EAA's Listing of Special Light-Sport Aircraft|accessdate = 13 November 2012|last = Experimental Aircraft Association|year = 2012|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20140228070151/http://sportpilot.org/learn/slsa|archive-date = 28 February 2014|url-status = dead}}
Operational history
By December 2011 one hundred examples had been registered and flown worldwide.
