Some of the most well-known projects by Herzog & de Meuron include the conversion of the Bankside Power Station into the Tate Modern in London, the Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg, and the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the "Bird's Nest", designed for the 2008 Olympics.{{Cite web |title=Six buildings to know by Herzog & de Meuron {{!}} Royal Academy of Arts |url=https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/article/six-buildings-to-know-by-herzog-and-de-meuron |access-date=2024-11-20 |website=www.royalacademy.org.uk |language=en}} Herzog, along with Pierre de Meuron, has received the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the Royal Gold Medal, among numerous other awards.{{cite web |url=https://www.pritzkerprize.com/laureates/2001 |title=Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureates 2001: Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron |website=Pritzker Architecture Prize |access-date=2024-07-01}}{{Cite web |title=Royal Gold Medal 2020 |url=https://www.architecture.com/awards-and-competitions-landing-page/awards/royal-gold-medal/royal-gold-medal-2020 |access-date=2024-07-26 |website=www.architecture.com}}

Early life and education

Jacques Herzog was born in Basel, Switzerland.{{Cite web |title=ETH Basel - Prof. Jacques Herzog |url=https://archive.arch.ethz.ch/studio-basel/people/prof.-jacques-herzog.html |access-date=2024-11-20 |website=archive.arch.ethz.ch}} Growing up in Basel, Herzog developed an early interest in the arts and architecture, influenced by the cultural history of his hometown. He was in the same grade school class as Pierre de Meuron, who would later become his long-term collaborator and business partner. He pursued his passion by enrolling for degree in architecture at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), before continuing his studies at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich).{{Cite web |last=Volner |first=Ian |title=Swiss Architecture Firm Herzog & De Meuron Celebrates 40 Years |url=https://www.wsj.com/articles/swiss-architecture-firm-herzog-de-meuron-celebrates-40-years-1541342966?reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink}} After receiving their degree in 1975, Herzog stayed at ETH working as teaching assistant to Prof Dolf Schnebli. Career

Herzog & de Meuron gained international recognition their ability to join refinement with pragmatism and urbanism; their projects respond to both the collective realm of the city and the needs of their clients. Their interest in the built world is based on uncovering, or discovering, the potential of what is already there.{{Cite news |last=Freedman |first=Lisa |date=2023-03-22 |title=The delectable daring of Herzog & de Meuron |url=https://www.ft.com/content/cd438cda-e2a4-4d64-9426-e713227aa205 |access-date=2024-09-16 |work=Financial Times}}{{Cite web |last=Viva |first=Arquitectura |title=AV Monografías 114 - Herzog & de Meuron 2000-2005 |url=https://arquitecturaviva.com/publications/av-monografias/herzog-de-meuron-1-8- |access-date=2024-09-16 |website=Arquitectura Viva |language=en}}{{Cite book |last=Rüegg |first=Arthur |title=Twentyfive x Herzog & de Meuron |last2=Rüegg |first2=Arthur |date=2022 |publisher=Steidl Verlag |isbn=978-3-96999-138-1 |editor-last=von Moos |editor-first=Stanislaus |location=Göttingen |pages=86 |chapter=Reading the Signs}}

Herzog & de Meuron's projects are noted for their diversity in both form and function, from cultural institutions and sports facilities to residential buildings and urban master plans. Their ability to adapt their design approach to the context of each project while maintaining a high level of architectural integrity has earned them numerous awards, including the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2001.{{cite web |url=https://www.pritzkerprize.com/laureates/2001 |title=Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureates 2001: Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron |website=Pritzker Architecture Prize |access-date=2024-07-01}}

Collaboration with artists

Herzog has maintained a longstanding and profound collaboration with artists throughout his career, which has significantly influenced his architectural approach.

In the 1970s, Herzog exhibited his own artwork in various galleries and art spaces: Videos, work on paper, installation pieces – using different materials such as tar, asphalt boards, plywood and styrofoam.{{Cite web |title=Gallery {{!}} STAMPA |url=https://www.stampa-galerie.ch/gallery |access-date=2025-01-28 |website=www.stampa-galerie.ch}}

Two significant early influences on Herzog were artist Joseph Beuys and architect Aldo Rossi, the latter being his professor during his studies at ETH Zurich.{{Cite web |last=Viva |first=Arquitectura |title=Jacques Herzog: |url=https://arquitecturaviva.com/articles/jacques-herzog-al-final-emprendimos-un-viaje-propio |access-date=2025-01-28 |website=Arquitectura Viva |language=en}}{{Cite web |title=Herzog & de Meuron |url=https://www.herzogdemeuron.com/ |access-date=2025-01-28 |website=Herzog & de Meuron |language=en-US}} His proximity to the art scene and friendships with artists have impacted his architectural philosophy, favouring a concept-based approach over a stylistic one. Herzog, along with Pierre de Meuron, initiated Joseph Beuys's involvement in the Basel Carnival (Fasnacht) through the creation of felt suit costumes and the reproduction of other elements of Beuys's iconic installation "Feuerstätte". The physical remnants of that 1978 carnival event have then been piled up, reassembled and transformed – based on a sketch by Beuys – into “Feuerstätte II”, a large installation piece which is since then part of the permanent collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel.{{Cite web |last=swissinfo.ch |first=S. Academia

Herzog has been actively involved in academia, contributing to architectural education internationally.

After graduating from the ETH Zurich in 1975, he served as an assistant to Professor Dolf Schnebli at ETH Zurich in 1977.{{cite web |title=Prof. Jacques Herzog |url=https://archive.arch.ethz.ch/studio-basel/people/prof.-jacques-herzog.html |access-date=14 October 2023 |publisher=ETH Zurich}} In 1983, he held a visiting professorship at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.{{cite web |title=Jacques Herzog – Who's Who |url=https://whoswho.de/bio/jacques-herzog.html |access-date=14 October 2023 |publisher=Who's Who |language=de}} Herzog began teaching as a visiting professor at Harvard University in 1989.{{cite web |title=Jacques Herzog |url=https://engadin-art-talks.ch/de/speakers/jacques-herzog |access-date=14 October 2023 |publisher=Engadin Art Talks |language=de}} {{cite web |title=Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron |url=https://www.gsd.harvard.edu/people/jacques-herzog-and-pierre-de-meuron/ |access-date=2024-07-01 |website=Harvard Graduate School of Design}}

From 1999 to 2018, de Meuron and Jacques Herzog served as full professors at ETH Zurich, where they significantly contributed to architectural research and pedagogy. There they founded with Swiss architects Roger Diener and Marcel Meili and social geographer Christian Schmid the ETH Studio Basel – Contemporary City Institute. It was a research institute affiliated with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich), located in Basel, Switzerland.{{Cite web |title=ETH Studio Basel – Contemporary City Institute |url=https://www.ethz.ch/en/the-eth-zurich/organisation/departments/architecture/studio-basel.html |access-date=October 10, 2023 |website=ETH Zurich}} It was operational from 1999 to 2018.{{Cite web |title=11 professors appointed at ETH Zurich and EPFL – ETH-Rat |url=https://ethrat.ch/en/11-professors-appointed-at-eth-zurich-and-epfl-2/ |access-date=2024-11-20 |language=en-US}}{{cite web |title=ETH Studio Basel |url=https://archive.arch.ethz.ch/studio-basel/people/prof.-jacques-herzog.html |access-date=14 October 2023 |publisher=ETH Zurich}} The institute conducted interdisciplinary research, combining architecture, urban planning, and sociology to analyze urban developments and proposed innovative solutions. Approach and focus

Since the company’s founding, Jacques Herzog has worked collaboratively with co-founder Pierre de Meuron: ‘Pierre de Meuron and I have always loved trying things out, being experimental – ever since we were in grade school together. It’s the way we are. We’re curious by nature.’{{Cite journal |last=Cannonica |first=Finn |date=25 April 2015 |title=«Ohne Mauer gäbe es keine menschliche Zivilisation» - Ein Gespräch mit dem Architekten Jacques Herzog |url=https://www.herzogdemeuron.com/writings/without-walls-there-would-be-no-human-civilization-en/ |journal=Das Magazin |volume=17 |pages=12-23}} Each has brought their specific strengths to the partnership as ‘a source of some difference to start with in terms of centres of interest, character, and so on.’ Herzog and de Meuron have extended this mode of collaboration to a larger group of partners that have successively joined the practice over the years.{{Cite journal |last=Chevrier |first=Jean-François |date=2006 |title=Jacques Herzog, Jean-François Chevrier: Ornamento, Estructura, Espacio. Jacques Herzog is heavily involved in the competitions, conceptual design, and the development of all projects by Herzog & de Meuron – architecture, urbanism and design. Drawing on his practical and academic experience, he shapes the work of the company out of an analytical perspective that considers the environmental, cultural, historical and social context of each project in its specificity – while also giving great importance to how people will one day use and inhabit these spaces.{{cite book |last1=Herzog |first1=Jacques |title=The Emotional Power of Space: Twelve Conversations |last2=Bêka |first2=Ila |last3=Lemoine |first3=Louise |year=2023 |isbn=9791092194067 |editor1-last=Bêka |editor1-first=Ila |pages=27–38 |chapter=A Gestural Architecture: Jacques Herzog |editor2-last=Lemoine |editor2-first=Louise}}{{cite web |title=Jacques Herzog in conversation with Louise Lemoine and Ila Bêka |url=https://www.herzogdemeuron.com/writings/jacques-herzog-in-conversation-with-louise-lemoine-and-ila-beka/ |access-date=31 October 2024}}

Herzog also collaborated with de Meuron – and occasionally with artists such as Rémy Zaugg or Ai Weiwei – on urbanistic and territorial projects. This started already in their early years with an in depth analysis of the metropolitan area of Basel,{{Cite web |title=Herzog & de Meuron |url=https://www.herzogdemeuron.com/projects/077-eine-stadt-im-werden-urban-study/ |access-date=2025-03-04 |website=Herzog & de Meuron |language=en-US}} which ultimately led to the foundation of the “ETH Studio Basel” (1999){{Cite web |title=ETH Basel {{!}} ETH Studio Basel |url=https://studiobasel.ethz.ch/ |access-date=2025-03-04 |website=archive.arch.ethz.ch}} together with Roger Diener and Marcel Meili. The focus was the analysis of landscapes and urban territories across the world; The theoretical output was summarized in their publication “The Inevitable Specificity of Cities”.{{Cite web |title=The Inevitable Specificity of Cities – Open Access – ETH Studio Basel |url=https://studiobasel.ethz.ch/publication/the-inevitable-specificity-of-cities |access-date=2025-03-04 |website=studiobasel.ethz.ch |language=en-US}}
