It is powered by a 2.7-litre V6 bi-turbo diesel engine, producing {{convert|230|bhp|kW PS|0|abbr=on}} and {{convert|500|Nm|lb.ft|0|abbr=on}} of torque, it is rear wheel drive.{{cite journal |last1=Strong |first1=Dan |title=E-Type lives again! |journal=Auto Express |date=10 September 2002 |issue=772 |pages=6–7}} The engine was developed with Peugeot and previewed the specification prior to the launch of the Jaguar S-Type diesel.
Designed by Ian Callum, the 5-door hatchback features rear-hinged doors based on technology from the Mazda RX-8, which was part of the Ford group at the time, and a side hinged rear door.
