Art
Dr. Cottrell and his partner, Joseph Lovett, began collecting art in the 1970s and have built an exceptional collection of contemporary art. Their collection has a particular depth because they build relationships with artists and stick with them as their work develops.{{Cite web|url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/os-mjp-oma-conversation-continues-20161117-column.html|title=Orlando Museum of Art collection offers peek at couple's New York treasures|website=Chicago Tribune|date=17 November 2016 |language=en-US|access-date=2020-02-03}} "As collectors, they're very involved in getting to know the artists they collect," says Orlando Museum of Art curator Hansen Mulford. In 2001 they were listed among Art & Antiques Top 100 Collectors.{{Cite web|url=https://sites.newpaltz.edu/news/2005/01/co-conspirators-artist-and-collector-the-collection-of-james-cottrell-and-joseph-lovett/|title=Co-Conspirators: Artist and Collector The Collection of James Cottrell and Joseph Lovett|website=New Paltz: State University of NY|date=13 January 2005 |language=en-US|access-date=2020-02-03}}
