Jan Hisgen was a Dutch footballer who played as a forward for RAP at the turn of the century. He played a crucial role in helping the club win the first KNVB Cup in 1899 and the first-ever international club trophy in European football in 1900, the Coupe Van der Straeten Ponthoz, scoring the winner in both finals.{{Cite web |url=https://sportgeschiedenis.nl/sporten/voetbal/op-bezoek-bij-jan-pick-hisgen-de-voetballer-die-125-jaar-geleden-de-eerste-bekerfinale-besliste/ |title=Op bezoek bij Jan ‘Pick’ Hisgen, de voetballer die 125 jaar geleden de eerste bekerfinale besliste |trans-title=Visiting Jan 'Pick' Hisgen, the footballer who decided the first cup final 125 years ago |language=nl |website=sportgeschiedenis.nl |date=7 May 2024 |access-date=21 April 2025 }}{{Cite web |url=https://www.rsssf.org/tablesc/coupe-vdsp.html#00 |title=1900 Coupe Van der Straeten Ponthoz |publisher=RSSSF |date=10 February 2022 |accessdate=21 April 2025 |archive-date=9 July 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220709122415/https://www.rsssf.org/tablesc/coupe-vdsp.html#00 |url-status=live }}

Club career

Little is known about his life; Hisgen joined the ranks of RAP at some point in the mid to late 1890s, helping the club win the 1897–98 West Division, four points clear of second-place Sparta. In the national championship play-off against the Eastern champions Vitesse, he scored a hat-trick to help his side to a 4–2 victory,{{Cite web |url=https://www.delpher.nl/nl/kranten/view?query=hisgen&coll=ddd&identifier=ddd:010177292:mpeg21:a0061 |title=Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad |language=nl |website=www.sparta-rotterdam.nl |date=26 April 1898 |access-date=21 April 2025 }} although some reports say that the four goals were all scored by Hisgen.{{Cite web |url=http://www.vitesse.org/historie/competitie/landskampioen3.html |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160926005923/http://www.vitesse.org/historie/competitie/landskampioen3.html |url-status=dead |archive-date=26 September 2016 |title=Vitesse en het landskampioenschap deel 3 |trans-title=Vitesse and the national championship part 3 |language=nl |access-date=21 April 2025}}

In the following season, Hisgen was a member of the RAP squad that became the first team in the Netherlands to win the double, the 1898–99 Championship and the 1898–99 KNVB Cup; in the latter's final, he scored the only goal of the match in extra-time to seal a 1–0 victory over HVV Den Haag.{{Cite web |url=https://sportgeschiedenis.nl/sporten/voetbal/ook-in-de-eerste-bekerfinale-stond-een-ploeg-uit-amsterdam/ |title=Ook in de eerste bekerfinale stond een ploeg uit Amsterdam |trans-title=A team from Amsterdam also appeared in the first cup final |language=nl |website=sportgeschiedenis.nl |date=16 April 2022 |access-date=21 April 2025 }}{{Cite web |url=https://www.totoknvbbeker.nl/100-finales/1899-r.a.p.-wint-den-holdertbeker |title=1899: R.A.P. wint den holdertbeker |trans-title=1899: R.A.P. wins the holding cup |language=nl |website=www.totoknvbbeker.nl |date=31 January 2018 |access-date=21 April 2024 }}{{Cite web |url=https://www.voetbalkroniek.nl/2013/11/nederlandse-voetbalbeker-1898-99.html#more |title=Nederlandse voetbalbeker 1898-99 |trans-title=Dutch Football Cup 1898-99 |language=nl |website=www.voetbalkroniek.nl |date=23 November 2013 |access-date=21 April 2025 }} In the following year, in 1900, he was part of the RAP side that participated in the first edition of the Coupe Van der Straeten Ponthoz, which is regarded by many as the first-ever European club trophy.{{Cite web |url=http://europeancuphistory.com/origins.html |title=European Cup Origins |website=europeancuphistory.com |accessdate=21 April 2025 |archive-date=5 November 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211105155959/http://www.europeancuphistory.com/origins.html |url-status=live }} The tournament was held in Brussels, and in the final on 17 April, Hisgen once again scored the winner for RAP against HVV to seal a 2–1 victory, thus lifting the first international club trophy in European football.

In that same year, Hisgen also helped RAP win the Coupe Glorieux in Liège, which involved many leading English clubs.
