History

Janji was founded by David Spandorfer and Michael Burnstein when they were students at Washington University in St. Louis.{{cite web|title=Olin Business School Student Puts Love of Running to Work for Social Causes |url=http://smallbusiness.janice168.com/2012/06/15/olin-business-school-student-puts-love-of-running-to-work-for-social-causes/ |archive-url=https://archive.today/20130126164213/http://smallbusiness.janice168.com/2012/06/15/olin-business-school-student-puts-love-of-running-to-work-for-social-causes/ |url-status=dead |archive-date=26 January 2013 |publisher=Let's Talk About Small Business |accessdate=6 July 2012 }} The original name of the business was "Edele." They changed the name, co-founder David Spandorfer said, because people could not figure out how to pronounce "Edele" and often confused the name with Adele. "Janji," its current and permanent name, means "promise" in Malay.{{cite news|last=Ko|first=Wei-Yin|title=WU students win prize for shorts program|url=http://www.studlife.com/news/national-news/2011/11/03/wu-students-win-prize-for-shorts-program/|accessdate=13 July 2012|newspaper=Student Life|date=3 November 2011}}

In 2010, Spandorfer and Burnstein won $15,000 in the Youthbridge Social Enterprise and Innovation Competition (SEIC) at Washington University; in 2011, they won an additional $20,000 from the UCCS Sports/Outdoors Business Plan Competition.

In May 2012, Janji launched their first product line at Big River Running, a specialty running store in St. Louis, Missouri. This first product line released shirts and shorts designed based on the flags of Haiti and Kenya.{{cite news|last=Druley|first=Kevin|title=Entrepreneurs' clothing line benefits needy|newspaper=The Kane Country Chronicle|date=2012-06-26}}

Charities

Janji works with partner organizations based in the countries they sponsor, with a focus on charities and nonprofits dedicated to providing water to developing nations. In an interview with a local newspaper in Brookline, Massachusetts, Michael Burnstein, co-founder, emphasized that Janji looks for organizations that provide "innovative" and "proven" solutions to the global water crisis.{{cite news|last=Studley|first=Ashley|title=Brookline man launches socially conscious running apparel line|url=http://www.wickedlocal.com/brookline/news/x2067838430/Brookline-man-launches-socially-conscious-running-apparel-line#axzz20W886Ki9|accessdate=13 July 2012|newspaper=Brookline Tab|date=15 June 2012}}
