Television career

Initially, Jeremy Clarkson wanted James May to present the rebooted series of Top Gear; however, May was rejected by the BBC,{{cite web | url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYcTyVJCoBk&t=1069s | title=James May on the global success of Top Gear, the end of the Grand Tour and more | Ti podcast 200 | website=YouTube | date=25 February 2024 }} with Dawe agreeing to present the first series alongside Clarkson and Richard Hammond.

When May wished to present the show for the second series due to the increasing popularity of the programme, Clarkson thought about Dawe staying and to have four presenters. However, his co-presenter Richard Hammond was close to being fired by BBC management alongside Dawe.{{Cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/media/2015/may/20/top-gear-bosses-considered-ditching-richard-hammond-says-andy-wilman|title=Top Gear bosses considered ditching Richard Hammond, says Andy Wilman|last=Plunkett|first=John|date=2015-05-20|website=The Guardian|language=en|access-date=2018-03-12}} Nevertheless show executive producer Andy Wilman strongly supported Hammond's position on the show at the time, stating later in Top Gear magazine "There was no doubt that Richard would stay”.

Following his departure from Top Gear, Dawe returned to his presenting career in 2005, appearing on ITV's Used Car Roadshow with Penny Mallory until the programme was cancelled in 2007.{{cite web | url=http://www.porsche968uk.co.uk/used-car-roadshow.htm | title=Used Car Roadshow on Men & Motors | accessdate=8 May 2015}}{{cite web | url=http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/ingear/cars/article62968.ece | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150518075238/http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/ingear/cars/article62968.ece | url-status=dead | archive-date=18 May 2015 | title=Who needs new cars anyway?|website= The Sunday Times | accessdate=8 May 2015}} From 2009 to 2010, he presented Classic Gear alongside Mallory and Alice Crocker, a show about classic cars.{{Cite web |date=2023-09-19 |title=Prime Video: Classic Gear |url=https://www.primevideo.com/detail/Classic-Gear/0L7F2PS8UDXDQONHQM81L17MOR |access-date=2023-09-19 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230919135258/https://www.primevideo.com/detail/Classic-Gear/0L7F2PS8UDXDQONHQM81L17MOR |archive-date=19 September 2023 }} Dawe went on to present the 2020 Body Shop Awards, reuniting with Mallory again.{{cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9nxKjnZECg|title=Penny Mallory & Jason Dawe presenting the 2020 Body Shop Awards|website=YouTube |date=11 May 2021 }}
