The Javelin, also called the Javelin 14 and O'Day Javelin is an American sailing dinghy that was designed by Uffa Fox as a one-design racer and first built in 1960.{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/javelin-14-fox|title= Javelin 14 (Fox) sailboat |access-date= 17 July 2020|last= McArthur| first= Bruce |work= sailboatdata.com|year= 2020|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20190502151138/https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/javelin-14-fox|archive-date= 2 May 2019|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/designer/fox-uffa|title= Uffa Fox|access-date= 17 July 2020|last= McArthur| first= Bruce |work= sailboatdata.com|year= 2020|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20200115162935/https://sailboatdata.com/designer/fox-uffa|archive-date= 15 January 2020|url-status= live}}Sherwood, Richard M.: A Field Guide to Sailboats of North America, Second Edition, pages 38-39. Production

The design was built by O'Day Corp. in the United States. The company produced 5100 examples of the design, but it is now out of production.{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/builder/oday-corp|title= O'Day Corp.|access-date= 17 July 2020|last= McArthur| first= Bruce |work= sailboatdata.com|year= 2020|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20190502151107/https://sailboatdata.com/builder/oday-corp|archive-date= 2 May 2019|url-status= live}}

Design

The Javelin is a recreational sailboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim. It has a fractional sloop rig with anodized aluminum spars, a nearly plumb stem, a vertical transom, a transom-hung, kick-up rudder controlled by a tiller and a retractable centerboard. The hull alone displaces {{convert|475|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} and carries {{convert|49|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} of galvanized steel ballast. A fixed keel model was produced in small numbers and carries {{convert|195|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} of iron ballast.{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/javelin-14-fox-fk|title= Javelin 14 (Fox) FK sailboat|access-date= 17 July 2020|last= McArthur|first= Bruce|work= sailboatdata.com|year= 2020|archive-url= https://archive.today/20200717155327/https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/javelin-14-fox-fk|archive-date= 17 July 2020|url-status= live}}

The boat has a draft of {{convert|3.83|ft|m|abbr=on}} with the centerboard extended and {{convert|6|in|cm|abbr=on}} with it retracted, allowing beaching or ground transportation on a trailer. The fixed keel model has a draft of {{convert|2.00|ft|m|abbr=on}}.

The boat may be fitted with a small outboard motor up to {{convert|8|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} for docking and maneuvering.

The design is equipped with a lockable storage compartment in the bow and gear lockers under the seats.

The design has a Portsmouth Yardstick racing average handicap of 111.8.

Operational history

In a 1994 review Richard Sherwood described the design as, "a beamy, stable small day sailer. Javelin has an unusually large (nine-foot) cockpit, a gear locker under the seats, and a lockable storage compartment under the deck. She is self-bailing and self-rescuing. The transom is reinforced to take outboards up to eight horsepower."
