History

The original Jebel Ali Village was constructed in 1977 to provide accommodation to construction contractors' staff.{{cite web| url=http://www.dubaiasitusedtobe.net/JebelAliVillage1978.shtml | title=Jebel Ali Village 1978 | work=Dubai as it used to be | accessdate=28 December 2021 }} At this time, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum planned to develop Jebel Ali into an industrial area with its own airport, port, and township. The remoteness from central Dubai meant that Jebel Ali Village had to be self-sufficient, making residents develop a strong attachment to the area, even after they had left. Jebel Ali Village was effectively a small British-style garden city.{{cite news |last=Ramos |first=Stephen J. |date=May 2008 |title=Sinews of Growth: Generative Infrastructural Urbanism in Dubai |url=https://mbrsgcdn.azureedge.net/cmsstorage/mbrsg/files/00/00f48455-3aea-42e4-852f-fa5d0c88d2de.pdf |accessdate=29 December 2021 |publisher=Dubai School of Government |location=UAE |volume=4 |series=Policy Brief}} It was a project of Sir William Halcrow and Partners and acted as a prototype for further semi-autonomous residential areas in Dubai such as Emirates Hills and The Gardens.{{cite book| title=Dubai Amplified: The Engineering of a Port Geography | first=Stephen J. | last=Ramos | date=2016 | isbn=978-1317147619 | publisher=Taylor & Francis }}

Construction for the redevelopment of Jebel Ali village had begun by 2008 and was originally expected to be completed by 2013. The existing villas were to be demolished to give space for new ones. Jebel Ali Village upon completion was planned to include commercial, community, and retail facilities, and the expansion of the existing central park to 12 hectares.{{cite web | website=Estatesdubai.com | url=http://www.estatesdubai.com/2007/08/nakheel-to-re-develop-jebel-ali-village.html | title=Nakheel to re-develop Jebel Ali Village | date=August 2007 | access-date=2009-05-21 | archive-date=2009-02-27 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090227153050/http://www.estatesdubai.com/2007/08/nakheel-to-re-develop-jebel-ali-village.html | url-status=dead }}{{cite web | website=Ameinfo.com | url=https://www.ameinfo.com/129651.html | title=Nakheel to redevelop Jebel Ali Village | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080420211009/https://www.ameinfo.com/129651.html | accessdate=20 April 2008 | archive-date=2008-04-20 }}{{cite web | website=Burthill.com | url=http://www.burthill.com/projects/pages/jebel_ali | title=Jebel Ali Village | access-date=2009-05-21 | archive-date=2009-06-11 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090611082134/http://www.burthill.com/projects/pages/jebel_ali | url-status=dead }} However, the project was put on hold due to the 2008 financial crisis and the Great Recession, which affected Dubai severely.{{cite news | url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8249313.stm | work=BBC News | location=UK | title=Recession bites hard in Dubai | date=11 September 2009}} Instead, Nakheel announced in 2013 that the company intended to renovate the existing villas.{{cite news| newspaper=The National | url=http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/the-dubai-village-that-came-back-from-the-dead | title=The Dubai Village that came back from the dead | first=Colin | last=Simpson | date=2 June 2013 | location=UAE }}
