Jeffery Stuart Pettis is an American-born biologist and entomologist known for his extensive research on honeybee behavior. He is currently head of Apimondia.{{Cite web|url=https://honeycouncil.ca/news-from-apimondia/|title = News from Apimondia – Canadian Honey Council|website=Honeycouncil.ca}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.apimondia.com/en/the-federation/executive-council|title=Executive Council|website=Apimondia.com|access-date=2019-10-30|archive-date=2017-06-25|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170625084723/http://www.apimondia.com/en/the-federation/executive-council|url-status=dead}} He was the research leader at the United States Department of Agriculture's Beltsville Bee Laboratory (BBL). His research has led to significant breakthroughs in understanding and managing CCD, a primary cause of North American bee population decline. He is also known for discovering with Dennis vanEngelsdorp, then at Pennsylvania State University, the ability of bees to detect pesticides and harmful fungi in collected pollen and subsequently quarantine the harmful substances from the rest of the hive.{{Cite web|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/environment/nature/study-reveals-how-bees-reject-toxic-pesticides-2262451.html|title=Study reveals how bees reject 'toxic' pesticides|website=Independent.co.uk|date=4 April 2011}} His research has also studied the synergistic effects of Imidacloprid on bees, an insecticide derived from nicotine which has been shown to contribute to CCD.{{cite journal|url=http://www.bulletinofinsectology.org/pdfarticles/vol67-2014-125-130lu.pdf|journal=Bulletin of Insectology |volume=67|pages=125–130|date=2014|issn=1721-8861|title=Sub-lethal exposure to neonicotinoids impaired honey bees winterization before proceeding to colony collapse disorder|issue=1 }}
