Biography

Miron is an outspoken libertarian. He was one of the 166 economists to sign a letter to congressional leaders in opposition to the bailout plan put forth by the U.S. federal government in response to the financial crisis of 2007–2008. He advocated that those companies that floundered during the crisis should be bankrupt instead of receiving government help.{{cite news |first=Jeffrey A. |last=Miron |url=http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/29/miron.bailout/ |title=Commentary: Bankruptcy, not bailout, is the right answer |publisher=CNN |date=2008-09-29 |accessdate=2009-02-09}} He has proposed three policy reforms to help the US economy recover from the financial crisis: cutting entitlements, freezing regulation, and replacing the existing tax code with a flat tax on consumption.{{Cite web|url=http://www.learnliberty.org/content/top-3-policy-reforms-grow-economy|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120323175330/http://www.learnliberty.org/content/top-3-policy-reforms-grow-economy|url-status=dead|title=Professor Miron discusses three policy reforms to aid the recovery of the US economy|archivedate=March 23, 2012}} Miron has also spoken out against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, arguing that it is economically unfeasible and will increase the US deficit; instead, he suggests limiting government intervention is the best way to lower overall health care costs and make health care accessible to the most people.{{Cite web|url=http://www.learnliberty.org/content/top-3-health-care-policy-proposals|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120323175735/http://www.learnliberty.org/content/top-3-health-care-policy-proposals|url-status=dead|title=Professor Miron discusses US health care reform|archivedate=March 23, 2012}} He has studied the effects of drug criminalization for 15 years, and argues that all drugs should be legalized.{{YouTube|Bx214J0PpA8|Jeffrey Miron – End The War on Drugs}}{{Cite web|url=http://www.businessinsider.com/all-drugs-should-be-legalized-immediately-says-harvard-prof-2010-10|title=All Drugs Should Be Legalized Immediately, Says Harvard Prof|website=Business Insider|access-date=2016-04-09}} He also supports the legalization of sex work.https://jeffreymiron.substack.com/p/maine-legalizes-the-sale-of-prostitution Miron supports open borders, arguing that the United States should impose "no immigration restrictions at all."{{cite news |first=Jeffrey |last=Miron |url=https://usatoday.com/story/opinion/2018/07/31/open-borders-help-economy-combat-illegal-immigration-column/862185002/ |title=Forget the wall already, it's time for the U.S. to have open borders |publisher=USA Today|date=2018-07-31 |accessdate=2018-08-01}} He opposes foreign interventions because "they cost far more than initially acknowledged while failing to help either America or the target countries."
