Jellyfish stings in Australia can cause pain, paralysis and death for swimmers with exposed skin. Numerous venomous species of jellyfish occur in Australian waters, including the box jellyfish and Irukandji Jellyfish. Box jellyfish are believed to have caused at least 69 deaths since record keeping began in 1883.[http://www.health.nt.gov.au/library/scripts/objectifyMedia.aspx?file=pdf/26/02.pdf&siteID=1&str_title=Box%20Jellyfish.pdf Chironex fleckeri (Box Jellyfish)] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160709201819/http://www.health.nt.gov.au/library/scripts/objectifyMedia.aspx?file=pdf%2F26%2F02.pdf |date=9 July 2016 }} NT Dept. of health and community services Although they are commonly mistaken for jellyfish, bluebottles are actually siphonophores.
