Verse 1

: The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest:{{bibleref2|Jeremiah|21:1|NKJV}} NKJV

Biblical commentator F. B. Huey notes that some scholars regard a later passage, {{bibleverse|Jeremiah|37:3-10|KJV}}, as a "background for Jeremiah 21:1-7".{{sfn|Huey|1993|p=198}}

"Pashhur" (or Pashur),{{bibleverse|Jeremiah|21:1|KJV}} KJV the son of Melchiah, is also named in Jeremiah 38:1.{{sfn|Ryle|2009}} "Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah" is described as the "second priest" or deputy in {{bibleverse|Jeremiah|52:24|KJV}}; later with others, he came again to Jeremiah for advice ({{bibleverse|Jeremiah|37:3-4|KJV}}) and was executed by Nebuchadnezzar at Riblah ({{bibleverse|Jeremiah|52:24-27|KJV}}).{{sfn|Coogan|2007|pp=1111-1112 Hebrew Bible}} According to Huey, he "was not hostile to Jeremiah" ({{bibleverse|Jeremiah|29:25|KJV}},{{bibleverse|Jeremiah|29:29|KJV|29}}; Jeremiah 37:3).{{sfn|Huey|1993|p=199}}

Verse 9

:He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes out and defects to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be as a prize to him.{{bibleref2|Jeremiah|21:9|NKJV}} NKJV

Huey, and others as well, notes that the wording of this verse is similar to Jeremiah 38:2;Note [b] in New King James Version on Jeremiah 38:2 Huey concludes that the prophecy could have been announced repeatedly.{{sfn|Huey|1993|p=333}}

Verse 13

:"Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley,

:And rock of the plain."

The Jerusalem Bible suggests that this announcement is "probably addressed to the inhabitants of the royal palace built on Ophel which looks down on the valley ('plain') of the Kidron.Jerusalem Bible (1966), footnote d at Jeremiah 21:13
