Jeremiah Burnham Tainter (January 6, 1836 in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin – February 5, 1920) was an inventor and engineer known for having designed the Tainter gate in 1886.{{cite news|title=Menomonie Historical Society Dedicates Museum |url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25346333/jeremiah_burnham_tainter_18361920/|newspaper=Chippewa Herald-Telegram |date=May 24, 1998|page=10|via = Newspapers.com|accessdate = November 13, 2018 }} {{Open access}} He began his work in hydrology in 1862, with the modification of pre-existing mill pond dams in Menomonie.[https://web.archive.org/web/20121104015654/http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/dictionary/index.asp?action=view&term_id=10393&search_term=tainter Tainter, Jeremiah Burnham 1836 - 1920] Tainter was employed by Knapp, Stout & Co., the largest lumber manufacturer in the United States in the last quarter of the 19th century.
