He played in the centre or at centre half forward.
Bohan captained Hawthorn in 1944 and 1946 and despite playing with the club for almost a decade, he never once appeared in a finals match. He won Hawthorn's 'Best and Fairest' award in 1943 and 1945.

He then left the club without a clearance in 1947 to join VFA side Camberwell, which was then playing under throw-pass rules,{{cite news|newspaper=The Argus|publication-place=Melbourne, VIC|title=J. Bohan incurs League suspension|date=10 April 1947|page=13}} where he went on to play 140 games and won their best and fairest award in 1951, 1952 and 1953.
