Offensive philosophy

While at Purdue, Chaney, along with head coach Joe Tiller, became known for using the spread offense – famously dubbed "basketball on grass" – at a time when it was still considered a novelty and not commonly used. The system relied on a strong passing game and Chaney's offense was one of the most potent in the country.{{Cite web |last=Lay |first=Ken |date=December 26, 2021 |title=Looking back at Purdue's basketball on grass offense under Joe Tiller, Jim Chaney |url=https://volswire.usatoday.com/2021/12/26/looking-back-at-purdues-boilermakers-basketball-on-grass-football-offense-under-joe-tiller-jim-chaney/ |access-date=March 20, 2024 |website=Vols Wire|publisher=USA Today |language=en-US}} This was evidenced by the fact that future Super Bowl-winning quarterback Drew Brees (starting quarterback from 1997-2000) thrived in Chaney's offense and went on to break and set college, Big Ten and NCAA records.

When Urban Meyer took his first coaching job at Bowling Green, he sought advice from several of the best coaches using the spread offense, including Jim Chaney.{{Cite web |last=Edwards |first=Drew |date=May 2, 2009 |title=Chaney knows his role, willing to adjust |url=http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/may/02/chaney-knows-his-role-willing-to-adjust/ |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090506165147/http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/may/02/chaney-knows-his-role-willing-to-adjust |archive-date=May 6, 2009 |website=Go Vols Xtra |publisher=University of Tennessee Athletics}} After spending a few years in the NFL Chaney gained a newfound appreciation for the pro-style offense.{{Cite web |last=Edwards |first=Drew |date=May 2, 2009 |title='Country guy' Chaney says it's time to roll at UT |url=http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/may/02/country-guy-chaney/ |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120309062916/http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/may/02/country-guy-chaney/ |archive-date=March 9, 2012 |website=Go Vols Xtra |publisher=University of Tennessee Athletics}} When Chaney came to Tennessee, he and Kiffin fielded a very pro-style offense, very similar to what Kiffin used at USC.
