Jody W. Deming (born July 2, 1952) is an American oceanographer. She is a professor of Oceanography and a marine microbiologist at the University of Washington (UW). Her research interests include studies of cold adapted microbes in their relation to astrobiology, biotechnology, and bioremediation. She is known for her extensive field work, being involved in over 50 nautical research expeditions.{{cite web|last1=Deming|first1=Jody|title=Linking trapped high salt concentrations with later ice algae production|url=https://www.ocean.washington.edu/story/Bacteria+in+Ice|website=UW School of Oceanography}}{{cite web|last1=Christensen|first1=Peter|last2=Hogslund|first2=Singe|title=Frostflowers|url=https://vimeo.com/49830362|website=Vimeo|date=20 September 2012 |publisher=Aarhaus University}}{{cite web|title=Greenland field trip|url=http://shamuweb.wixsite.com/shamulab/single-post/2015/04/22/Greenland-field-trip|website=SHAMU Lab}}{{cite news |last1=Rejcek |first1=Peter |title=Scientists collect frost flowers to test theory about windborne bacteria |url=https://antarcticsun.usap.gov/science/2535/ |work=The Antarctic Sun |date=October 21, 2011}} Deming is also the cofounder of the UW Astrobiology Extremophile Laboratory.
Education
Deming graduated cum laude from Smith College in Massachusetts in 1974 with a Bachelors in Biological Sciences specializing in Botany.{{cite web|last1=Deming|first1=Jody|title=Profiles: Jody Deming|url=https://depts.washington.edu/astrobio/drupal/profiles/jody-deming|website=University of Washington Astrobiology Program}} She was also awarded a Smith College Piano Scholarship during her undergraduate career.
