At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Baden competed for Australia, along with his fellow countryman Brandon Starc, in the men's high jump. Booking a berth on the nation's track and field team for the Games, Baden jumped a height of 2.29 metres to match his personal best that he set two years earlier in Melbourne and to attain the IAAF Olympic entry standard at the North Queensland Games in Cairns.{{cite news |first=Nicole |last=Jeffery |title=Rio Olympics 2016: High jumper Joel Baden books Games berth |url=http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/rio-olympics-2016-high-jumper-joel-baden-books-games-berth/news-story/d5f58c74996eacd5b126b91ae1108348 |publisher=The Australian |date=27 June 2016 |access-date=13 February 2017}} During the qualifying phase, Baden entered a height of 2.17 at his second attempt, but he could not trump the 2.20-metre barrier with all three failing attempts, ending his campaign quickly in a forty-first-place tie with Israel's Dmitry Kroyter.{{cite news |title=Athletics: Men's High Jump Qualification Round |url=https://www.rio2016.com/en/athletics-mens-high-jump-qual-round-group-b |website=Rio2016.com |publisher=Rio 2016 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games |access-date=15 February 2017 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160826085310/https://www.rio2016.com/en/athletics-mens-high-jump-qual-round-group-b |archive-date=26 August 2016}}{{cite news |title=Joel Bowden competes in high jump qualifying round in Rio |url=http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/sport/local-sport/joel-bowden-competes-in-high-jump-qualifying-round-in-rio/news-story/0bf9d678c0d776576da37318326d57b1 |publisher=Geelong Advertiser |date=15 August 2016 |access-date=13 February 2017}}
